The Swedish goaltender had hip surgery in August 2022 and hasn't played a game since. In his Golden Knights career, Lehner played 66 games and became not only a fan favourite but also a dependable goaltender.
Throughout his NHL career, he has struggled with injury issues but also dealt with bipolar disorder, ADHD and PTSD, as well as his undiagnosed mental health struggles that caused him to turn to drugs and alcohol. He was open about his battles with mental health issues in hopes of giving others who were dealing with similar issues the confidence to seek help.
The Golden Knights have grounds to terminate his contract due to his absence, but the NHLPA will fight to avoid a new precedent and will want to protect the rights of all players.
