It looks like we’re going to have one less cigar-wielding legend occupying NHL press boxes next season.

Glen Sather is stepping down from his role as president of the New York Rangers, according to multiple reports, ending a 19-year era. The 75-year-old will reportedly stay with the organization as an advisor, but how involved he’ll actually be in day-to-day operations is not yet known.

Sather has been the team president since 2000 and also held the role as general manager from then until the 2014-15 season. The Rangers have had their ups and downs on the ice over his tenure, but for almost 20 years the Rangers have arguably boasted more stability in their front office than any other organization.

The Sather-led Rangers missed the post-season each of his first four seasons at the helm, but put teams on the ice that made the playoffs in 11 of the following 12 seasons after the salary cap was instituted. Often competitive but never elite, New York made just one Stanley Cup Final appearance during Sather’s tenure — losing to the L.A. Kings in five games in 2014.

The Blue Shirts also captured the Presidents' Trophy as the NHL’s best regular season team the following campaign.

Sather will retire with five Stanley Cup rings, all earned in a seven-year period from 1984 to 1990 with the powerhouse Edmonton Oilers, which he constructed.

He was also behind the bench for the first four of those championships.
