Girona defender David Lopez has warned AC Milan that he and his team-mates will play without fear at San Siro, hoping to achieve a memorable result.

The Catalan side were perhaps the most captivating story within 2023-24 LaLiga season as they put up a real fight for the title for most of the season, sitting in top spot for four different spells before eventually finishing third.

What that meant is that they secured qualification for the Champions League for the first time in their history, but in truth it has been a tough lesson for them so far in their maiden campaign as they sit 30th.

Girona have five defeats and one win so far. A spirited 1-0 defeat away at PSG to open the campaign was followed by a 3-2 home loss to Feyenoord, then a 2-0 home win over Slovan Bratislava.

That didn’t inspire any resurgence though, with a 4-0 loss at PSV Eindhoven, a 1-0 defeat at Sturm Graz and another 1-0 loss to Liverpool the most recent results. They close with games against Milan and Arsenal, which their coach framed as being almost free hits.

David Lopez spoke at a pre-match press conference yesterday evening alongside the Girona head coach Michel, and his comments were relayed by MilanPress.

“San Siro is intimidating, but it is the ideal scenario to start again, maybe with a victory so we have everything to play for in the last game. We will not have excessive pressure,” he said.

“Milan have excellent attackers, but in Spain there are phenomenal ones. They have very fast players who are good in the final phase, they have great quality. We will need to be careful in every phase of the game.

“It is the first year for the club in the Champions League, some things could have been done better. But we are here. And tomorrow we can only win.

“I follow the Italian league, I hope to see Napoli [his former club] win the Scudetto again: it would be something incredible to win twice in a few years.

“Morata? He is the captain of our national team, he is very important for all of us. Now he is back in Italy, he knows the Italian league perfectly and we hope he can play a lot this season so he can help us for the summer competitions with Spain.”
