Gimme him: One player the Bears would steal from the Commanders
The Chicago Bears (4-2) are slated to face the Washington Commanders (5-2) in one of the premier games on the schedule this week, and it's a huge part to their rookie quarterbacks. Both Caleb Williams (first overall to the Bears) and Jayden Daniels (second overall to the Commanders) have given their teams unexpected early success and in position for a playoff push.
Both teams came in with the unknown of what their offensive potential could be, but both defenses were expected to fare well, and they have each held their own. For this week's column of 'Gimme him' we look at one of the Commanders mainstays on the defensive line, although he has been lost for the season due to injury.
Even though the Bears already traded for a former Commander defensive end in Montez Sweat who they signed to a long-term extension this off-season, there would be a perfect player to reunite Sweat with. Given the emergence of Gervon Dexter Sr. at defensive tackle, the Bears are still looking for a second player at that position, and none would fit better than Jonathan Allen.
Despite being out for the year with a torn pectoral muscle, Allen would present a massive upgrade to the Bears defensive front, pairing him with Sweat, Dexter, and DeMarcus Walker. Being a first-round pick in 2017 out of Alabama, Allen has been a force at the defensive tackle with the Commanders since entering the league, but had an incredible stretch from 2019-2023. In those years, Allen totaled 50 or more tackles and at least five sacks and established himself among one of the best defensive tackles in the entire league.
Even as the Bears defense continues to thrive, their defensive line could use upgrades as they've only totaled 18 sacks as a unit which has them sitting middle of the pack in the league. Allen may not get double-digit sacks but his pressure up the middle along with Dexter would make life easier on the pass rushers for Chicago.
Allen also has 59 tackles for loss in his career, including double-digit TFLs in each of the past three seasons before this year. All in all, Allen would help enforce the run defense as an anchor on the defensive line, and would surely open up plenty of opportunities for the outside pass rushers.
The Bears and Commanders have similarly built teams and while the quarterbacks are the main focus of the attention they're receiving, they've got several members of their defenses that are names worth recognizing in the league.
