Gibby may be done with the Blue Jays, but he's not done

Even though the Toronto Blue Jays have moved on from John Gibbons, it doesn’t mean the affable manager won’t have a second act elsewhere.

Joining the season finale of “Digging in with J.P. Arencibia,” the former Blue Jays skipper talked about his future in the game of baseball.

“I would love to keep managing,” he said. “These jobs are hard to come by, there’s no doubt about it, but I’m kind of in the age range where I’m not young, but I’m not old.”

In 11 years seasons of managing in Toronto, Gibbons has accumulated a record of 793-789. Although he’s not the kind of fresh face that appears en vogue around the league at the moment, he is well respected around the game and could be a steady presence for any team with a vacancy.

The managerial carousel hasn’t completely come to a halt just yet, but it’s clear at this point there are job openings in Texas, Los Angeles (with the Angels) and Minnesota.

One potential stumbling block for Gibbons could be his reputation as more of an old-school baseball man — a depiction of him he’s not sure is entirely fair.

“There are different ideas on analytics and all that. I’ve kind of gotten this reputation that I’m [anti-analytics] which couldn’t be farther from the truth,” he said. “But I still believe in a lot of tried-and-true methods that have been successful in the game for 100 years.”

What comes next for Gibbons is far from certain, but it’s clear he’s not looking to ride off into the sunset just yet.
