Giants send and delete an incredibly regrettable tweet

It was a tough game all around for the San Francisco Giants on Monday night. They lost 2-1 to the Los Angeles Dodgers, found themselves tied with the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wild-card spot, and they got in a benches-clearing shout-fest with the Dodgers when Madison Bumgarner decided to yell at Yasiel Puig.

But that’s not all. It was a tough night for whoever is behind the Giants’ Twitter account as well, as they sent out this incredibly regrettable tweet.

Yikes.

Let’s start with what the tweet was supposed to mean. What the author was trying to say was that Madison Bumgarner struck out Enrique “Kiké” Hernandez (note the accent) three times during Monday night’s game.

So the intent seems innocent enough, but there are just so many things wrong with that tweet. First, they chose to use “KKK” to represent three strikeouts, which was a bad choice since “KKK” is the nickname of the extremist group the Ku Klux Klan. Then they mashed up “KKK” with Enrique Hernandez’s nickname, only they forgot the accent. Kiké is his nickname, but without the accent, it’s an extremely offensive ethnic slur for Jewish people.

Obviously, the tweet was deleted. And it really doesn’t seem like there was any malicious intent behind it. Whoever sent it just had no idea how the tweet would read, or how to put an accent on the “e” in Kiké Hernandez’s name. (Here’s a guide.)
