Giants, Hurricanes Pull Off Goalie Swap Ahead Of 2025 Trade Deadline

The deals keep coming in the WHL ahead of the 2025 trade deadline. On Tuesday morning, the Vancouver Giants traded goaltender Matthew Hutchison, a 2025 fourth-round pick and a 2028 seventh-round pick, to the Moose Jaw Warriors for goaltender Brady Smith. This is the second trade this season Smith has been a part of, with the previous coming in early December when he went from the Lethbridge Hurricanes to the Warriors in the Brayden Yager deal.

Smith is a 19-year-old goaltender with 43 WHL games. In 23 games, he has a record of 10-9-2 and has made 612 saves. This will be a homecoming for Smith, who is from Cloverdale, BC, and played youth hockey at the Yale Hockey Academy.

As for Hutchison, the 18-year-old is 10-8-1 in 22 games this season. The 2025 NHL Draft prospect also has 43 games of WHL experience and defeated his new team earlier this season. With the acquisition, Moose Jaw now has two 18-year-old goaltenders, with Hutchison projected to share the crease with Josh Banini.
