Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul: “I don’t see us going 0-3”

Jason Pierre-Paul isn’t one for hyperbole. When the New York Giants defensive end says this Sunday’s divisional game against the Philadelphia Eagles is a must-win, you believe it.

“Honestly, it’s a must-win game,” Pierre-Paul said. “We know we need this game. It’s a division game. I don’t see us going 0-3.”

Since the NFL adopted its current playoff format in 1990, only three teams (the 1992 San Diego Chargers, 1995 Detroit Lions, and 1998 Buffalo Bills) have started 0-3 and made the playoffs.

As Pierre-Paul pointed out, this is a divisional game. The Giants are 0-2 while the rest of the division is 1-1. A win would put the Giants right back in the thick of things in the NFC East.

History suggests an 0-3 start is something pretty close to insurmountable to overcome but Pierre-Paul doesn’t believe it will come to that.

“The players we got, man, I don’t see it,” he said. “The players that we got aren’t going to allow that. Even with our defense, we started off last year pretty bad. We picked it up. I don’t know how we picked it up. Just communication and Coach (defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) giving us the right calls.

“We found it within ourselves to not put everything on the coaches. We actually had to do the work. That is what we did. We finished as one of the top defenses.”

Even with two losses, the Giants defense have allowed the fewest points (43) in the division. The main problem is the offense’s inability to score points. The Giants have scored only 13 points in two games and failed to score 20 points in eight consecutive games going back to last season.

Pierre-Paul believes it will take an effort from all three phases of the game for the Giants to get their first win of 2017.

“We have good talent on this team,” he said. “We just all need to come together. Offense needs to come together. Everybody sees it, but at the same time, we need to help them too as well.”

The offense’s struggles are well documented. The defense, in spite of allowing the fewest points in the NFC East, have a 50 percent conversion rate on third down. The special teams allowed an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown that clinched last Monday’s game for the Detroit Lions.

The Giants have an uphill battle against them. It’s the Eagles home opener and they have a raucous home field advantage at Lincoln Financial Field. Still, JPP believes what the Giants need to get a win in Philly.

“We just have to bond together and play great football,” he said. “Nothing the defense can do (on offense), but pretty sure they’re going to come out and play this week. They do every week. Just have to find that willpower to get things down.
