Ghana 0-2 Uruguay LIVE! Both teams out - World Cup 2022 result, match stream and latest updates today
Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored twice as Uruguay beat Ghana 2-0 on Friday but it was not enough to keep them in the World Cup after South Korea pipped them to the Group H runners-up spot with victory over Portugal.
Ghana, who famously missed an extra-time spot kick in a quarter-final against Uruguay in South Africa 12 years ago, spurned the chance to take the lead in the 21st minute when Andre Ayew’s tame penalty was easily saved by Sergio Rochet.
Uruguay made them pay with their first goals of the tournament as De Arrascaeta headed the ball over the line from close-range after a shot from Luis Suarez in the 26th minute and doubled their lead with a superb volley after Suarez was again involved in the buildup six minutes later.
The win lifted Uruguay to third place on four points, the same as South Korea, who squeaked through with more goals scored in the tournament after netting a late winner in a 2-1 victory over Portugal. Ghana finished bottom of the group with three points.

Suarez swansong not enough as Uruguay and Ghana crash out
17:14 , Jonathan Gorrie
Ghana and Uruguay both crashed out of the World Cup after a dramatic sequence of events in Group H despite La Celeste’s 2-0 win.
Twelve years of heartache appeared to weigh heavily on Andre Ayew’s shoulders as he stepped up to take Ghana’s penalty against Uruguay.
Over a decade since Asamoah Gyan’s infamous miss against La Celeste in Soccer City, Ayew had the chance for redemption. After a fast start from the Black Stats, Mohammed Kudus was brought down by Sergio Rochet and VAR intervention offered Ghana the chance to get one back on the most bitter of old rivals.
Ayew, however, missed his spot kick, a rather tame effort by any metric. From there, the belief dipped and Luis Suarez – ever the pantomime villain – rolled back the years. Outside of Suarez repeating his handball in 2010, the sight of him playing such a key role in a Uruguay win would surely have been the nightmare scenario for Ghana heading into their final group game.

Asomah Gyan not scared to admit revenge is on the cards
14:04 , Jonathan Gorrie
“When the draw was made and they saw Uruguay in Ghana’s group, the only thing in people’s mind was revenge. Ghana wants revenge, it is motivation,” Gyan told the BBC.
“People all over the world know what happened. It is behind me, but I’m human and it’s in the back of my mind.
“We have South Korea, Portugal and Uruguay - and the most important game for Ghana is against Uruguay. It is in the back of everybody’s mind, going for revenge, revenge, revenge.
“Our goal is to qualify for the next stage of the competition. If we are going to think Uruguay, Uruguay, Uruguay it is going to be a mistake. We have to qualify, that’s the most important thing.”

Suarez’s last dance?

World Cup permutations: How do Ghana and Uruguay get through?
13:14 , Jonathan Gorrie
A win for Ghana would certainly send them through. Should South Korea fail to beat Portugal, a draw would be enough for the Black Stars. If South Korea beat Portugal by one more than one goal and Ghana lose, South Korea will progress on goal difference.
For Uruguay, anything other than a win would see them exit. If they beat Ghana by one more than one goal compared to South Korea (should they Portugal), they will progress.
Ghana looking for revenge
13:04 , Jonathan Gorrie
Ghana have not forgotten what Luis Suarez did as billboards in the African country urge their side to take ‘revenge’ on Uruguay for 2010.
The scars remain for the Black Stars ahead of their Group C clash on Friday night.
Emotions are high after Suarez provocatively did the pre-match press conference and refused to apologise for saving a goal with his hand in the dying moments of extra time 12 years ago.
It has re-stoked rivalry after Suarez then blamed Ghana for missing the resulting penalty and losing the subsequent shootout.
It saw arguably the only African side good enough to win a World Cup knocked out.
Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey remembers watching the heartbreak unfold from Ghana: "It was very difficult. We had our aim and we thought we might be able to make history and by the end, we couldn’t and everybody was sad or down at the time."
Ghana can now knock out Uruguay after they beat South Korea last time out, leaving them in second place on three points.
Uruguay, who have just one point and have failed to score in the World Cup, must win and hope they better Korea’s scoreline against Portugal at the same time.

Suarez refuses to apologise for World Cup 2010 handball vs Ghana
12:47 , Jonathan Gorrie
Uruguay star Luis Suarez has refused to apologise for his infamous handball against Ghana on the eve of their World Cup reunion, insisting: “It’s not my fault - I didn’t miss the penalty”.
Suarez was involved in one of the most remarkable finishes to a World Cup match when the two sides met in the quarter-finals of the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
The forward was sent off in the dying seconds of extra-time after making a goal-saving clearance with his hand, with the scores level at 1-1 but Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting spot-kick and Uruguay went on to win on penalties, denying Ghana a historic moment as the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.
The two sides have not met since and, in a bold move, Uruguay nominated Suarez as their designated player to face the media and preview Friday’s game. The 35-year-old was informed by a Ghanaian journalist that he is referred to as “the devil himself” in the country and questioned why Suarez had never apologised for his actions.

Chris Hughton a quiet but vital part of Ghana’s shot at World Cup success
12:38 , Jonathan Gorrie
Chris Hughton sat high in the stands, stuck among the media in his green Ghana training garb, messaging down advice on a two-way radio to the bench as the west Africans beat South Korea on Monday to win their first points of the World Cup in Qatar.
The former Brighton manager and Republic of Ireland international full-back, is a key but almost invisible member of the coaching team, looking now to plot the downfall of Uruguay on Friday and win for Ghana a place in the last-16 of the tournament in Qatar.
Hughton, who turns 64 next month, has kept a low profile in Qatar in his role as technical adviser but there is little doubt he is an integral part of Ghana’s brains trust.
“He’s got a lot of experience and knowledge and he’s always trying to give his best for the team,” said coach Otto Addo, who was a surprise choice for Ghana after a disastrous Africa Cup of Nations finals in January and parachuted in only weeks ahead of their World Cup play-off against Nigeria in March.
Addo had no previous senior coaching experience but has been working at youth level in Germany for more than a decade. Hughton, whose father was born in Ghana and was visiting the country at the time, was asked to help.
Ghana scraped through that Nigeria tie, with some fortune, and the coaching team was kept in place for the World Cup.
“We have a very good relationship, Chris Hughton is a very experienced coach,” Addo added earlier this week.
Prediction: Uruguay to win
12:33 , Jonathan Gorrie
Ghana have been huge entertainment value at this World Cup so far, outlasting Korea after just missing out against Portugal in another five-goal thriller.
Drama, goals and action aplenty seems guaranteed whenever Otto Addo’s side are involved, though will that still be the case against Uruguay?
La Celeste have yet to score a single goal at this tournament and have put in two very lacklustre performances indeed.
But with three points an absolute necessity, they could well let the handbrake off here and show their quality.
Uruguay to win, 2-1.
Uruguay team news: Suarez could feature
12:32 , Jonathan Gorrie
For Uruguay, it will be interesting to see if Suarez features against the team that probably dislikes him the most, having been dropped to the bench and restricted to a late substitute’s cameo against Portugal, with Edinson Cavani starting alongside Darwin Nunez up top instead.
Key defender Ronald Araujo has yet to feature at this tournament due to having recently undergone thigh surgery and reports suggest Uruguay and Barcelona are not in accord over his recovery.
Ghana team news: Mensah pushing for start
12:31 , Jonathan Gorrie
Ghana defender Gideon Mensah has insisted that he will be fit for Friday’s game after being taken off late on in the thrilling 3-2 win over South Korea, revealing he was just suffering from cramp.
Mensah had been drafted in to replace Chelsea’s Reading loanee Baba Rahman at left-back.
