The Ghana Football Association has unveiled Swedish manager Lars Kim Björkegrenn as the new head coach of the Ghana national team. The Black Queens had been without a manager since the departure of Nora Hauptle following the expiration of her contract.

Björkegrenn is a seasoned manager, having most recently spent time in the NWSL with Racing Louisville. The Swede has found success in his career so far, including winning the Damallsvenskan in 2019 with Linköpings. The travelled manager also won the Cypriot First Division in 2021 whilst managing Apollon.

While at Linköpings, Björkegrenn guided the Swedish outfit to their highest ever Champions League position as they reached the quarter-finals in 2018.

Asante Twum, communications officer at the GFA, explained to the media that the process to find a new manager was a pinpointed process.

“After we lost Nora, we decided to search for a new coach. The decision of the Executive Council was to do headhunting. We went through the process of getting someone who is competent, capable and qualified to lead the team.”

Building towards WAFCON despite poor form

Ghana have had a torrid time recently. Following their loss to Zambia and missing out on the Olympics, WAFCON success has been identified as their key target for Björkegrenn.

“Kim Lars is a winner. He has won championships in Cyprus and Sweden. We believe that he has the right mentality and right mindset. He fits that particular project we are currently having with the Black Queens,” Twum said. Björkegrenn will arrive in Ghana in coming weeks to have a first look of the facilities and kickstart Ghana’s WAFCON preparations.

The Black Queens have been matched against South Africa, Mali and Tanzania in their WAFCON group. They will be expected to qualify to the knock-out rounds by fans and peers alike.
