Germany 2-0 Spain LIVE! Popp goal - Women’s Euro 2022 result, match stream and latest updates today
So this is what happens when the coming force runs, once again, into its own historically immovable object.
Spain, the pre-tournament favourites for these European Championships, are threatening to take the women’s game to new heights, shattering attendance records in continental and home fixtures, proud owners of a thriving domestic league that has produced a national team of unrivalled technical brilliance, infused chiefly with genius of the (almost) all-conquering Barcelona.
But never before have they beaten Germany and following a terrific contest at the Brentford Community Stadium - by some distance the best of these Euros so far - the hoodoo remains very much in tact, after goals from Klara Buhl and Alexandra Popp earned the eight-times champions a 2-0 victory.
The immediate upshot is that Germany will qualify from Group B as winners with a game to spare, while Spain appear on collision course for a quarter-final meeting with England, provided they can clinch second spot in what is now a winner-takes-all third game against Denmark.

FT: Germany 2-0 Spain

And Germany seal their place in the quarter-finals.
Really impressive display. Took their chances when they came and then they were so solid at the back.
Gave Spain no space at all, another clean sheet.
21:48 , Matt Verri
90+1 mins: Three minutes added on.
Again Spain find space in the box, again Spain don’t shoot. If ever there was a time to try your luck!
The patience continues though. Eventually Guerrero does poke an effort at goal, easily saved.
21:46 , Matt Verri
89 mins: Pretty much nothing has happened in the last 15 minutes - job done perfectly by Germany.
Thought Spain might be able to mount a late charge as they had threatened, but it hasn’t happened at all.
21:43 , Matt Verri
86 mins: That’s an awful challenge from Oberdorf. Yellow card as she absolutely flies into a challenge, and she will be suspended for the final group-stage match.
Not sure she’ll be too disappointed to miss out on a dead rubber and then be back for the knockout stages...
21:39 , Matt Verri
83 mins: Ball whipped into the box by Spain, who are going more direct now. Pina wins the header but it loops harmlessly towards the goalkeeper.
Time very much running out now for Spain...
GOOO... OFFSIDE!
21:37 , Matt Verri
Germany think they have a third but eventually the offside flag goes up!
Wassmuth has the ball in the back of the net after going round the goalkeeper, but she’s denied. VAR doesn’t comes to her rescue either.
21:36 , Matt Verri
80 mins: Germany make a rare return to the Spanish half and win a free-kick about 35 yards out. Taking their time over it too. They go for a clever routine, but it’s not very clever.
Fortunately for Germany, nor is Spain’s attempt at the counter. They’ve been tidy on the ball all night, but that was not great from Spain on the break.
21:34 , Matt Verri
78 mins: Really poor from Cardona. Spain have two or three chances to create a chance, can’t do so.
Work it wide to Cardona, who has so much time and space to put a cross into the box. Takes an age to do anything, then tries to go by herself and ends up giving away a free-kick.
21:32 , Matt Verri
76 mins: Oberdorf catches Bonmati late, free-kick Spain. Fair distance out and pretty central, not an ideal position.
Really good delivery though, once again it’s a German head on the end of it though.
21:31 , Matt Verri
74 mins: It’s one-way traffic, Germany sat so deep but they’re doing a good job. Spain working it side-to-side, pulling the German defence out of shape. Or at least trying to.
Eventually even Spain get fed up and just lump the ball intot he box. Frohms off her line to claim.
21:27 , Matt Verri
70 mins: Cardona the latest substitute brought on for Spain, who continue to press for a way back into this match. All looks so good until they get to the final final.
That’s a stunning save though! Spain go direct this time, long ball over the time. It’s a sensational volley from Caldentey, Frohms is up to the task and tips it over the bar.
21:23 , Matt Verri
67 mins: Yet another corner for Spain. It’s whipped in deep this time, Paredes makes the run to the back post but can’t direct the header. Comfortable wide.
Around 25 minutes, including stoppage-time, for Spain to score twice.
21:22 , Matt Verri
65 mins: Germany looking to slow the game down at every opportunity, as you’d expect. They’ll be content just to find the odd occasion to counter down. Focus is on staying solid at the back.
Spain yet to create a big chance since the break.
Malik Ouzia on that potential red card...
21:19 , Matt Verri
We’ve seen a few occasions during this tournament where VAR has chosen not to intervene in baffling circumstances and that’s surely another. Parades is very lucky because Spain should be down to ten.
21:17 , Matt Verri
61 mins: Tensions growing between the two sides, Spain getting more and more frustrated as they push for a way back into this. Germany holding firm.
They back a change too, Rauch off and Kleinherne comes on to replace the left-back. Change too for Spain, Pina replaces Garcia up front.
21:13 , Matt Verri
57 mins: Popp goes down, she would have been clean through on goal! Free-kick there and it has to be a red card, but the referee waves away the appeals. Germany not impressed. All came from Spain once again taking too long to shoot.
Now Germany break again, and they make a mess of it too. End-to-end all of a sudden.
21:12 , Matt Verri
55 mins: Ouahabi gets forward and wins a corner for Spain. Cleared behind at the near post, take two.
Make that take three! Near post again, Hegering heads it away. Caldentey gets another chance.
Chaos! Frohms comes, doesn’t get anywhere near it. Scramble in the box, Mapi Leon handles and Germany get the free-kick.
21:09 , Matt Verri
52 mins: Great tracking back by Buhl, helps out her defence and wins the ball back deep in the Germany half.
Spain finding a wall of white shirts in their way when they come forward. Haven’t been able to create anything really since the break.
21:05 , Matt Verri
49 mins: Batlle drills a shot at goal from range, finds its way through about four pairs of legs and goes behind. Germany convinced it’s a goal-kick, Spain scream for a corner. Goal-kick it is.
More nice football from Spain with no real end product.
21:03 , Matt Verri
47 mins: Early corner for Germany, Popp gets on the end of it again but this time Popp heads over the bar.
Spain might want to avoid giving away soft set-pieces... or at least start defending them better!
Back underway!
21:01 , Matt Verri
Second-half is up and running!
Lattwein on, Magull off for Germany at the break.
20:57 , Matt Verri
Spain with 68% possesion in that first-half... one shot on target to show for it.
The game plan has been perfect for Germany so far - can they pull it off for another 45 minutes? Would say so, judging by their display up to this point.
Popp does it again...

HT: Germany 2-0 Spain
20:46 , Matt Verri
Not a second of added time and that’s the break.
Germany with a two-goal lead. Buhl ruthlessly took advantage of an early error from Panos, before Popp’s flicked header doubled the lead late in the half.
Spain have had some nice moments, will still feel they’re just about in it.
20:44 , Matt Verri
44 mins: Absolutely brilliant ball in. Deep, so much space and Huth throws herself at it.
Flag had already gone for a foul though, Spain survive that scare.
20:43 , Matt Verri
43 mins: Ball played out to the left and Buhl has space to run.
Always looking to be direct, onto her right foot and the low effort at goal is blocked by Paredes. This time it’s Gwinn, pretty much playing as a central striker. The right-back’s strike is deflected behind for a corner.
20:40 , Matt Verri
40 mins: Very nearly sublime from Bonmati.
Ball comes back to her just inside the box, clips it beautifully towards the far corner. Wide of the post, not by much though. Don’t think Frohms was getting there.
Malik Ouzia at the Brentford Community Stadium
20:39 , Matt Verri
Giulia Gwinn is having a terrific game at right-back for Germany. She does everything at a million miles-per-hour but somehow always has the ball under impeccable control, too.
GOAL! Germany 2-0 Spain | Alexandra Popp 37'
20:37 , Matt Verri
Saying that, Paredes has to head away a dangerous cross in her own six-yard box. Corner Germany.
AND THEY HAVE A SECOND GOAL!
Rauch whips it in, Popp is there to flick it into the far corner. So simple, so effective. Took a slight deflection off Guijarro.
20:35 , Matt Verri
35 mins: Spain put another lovely move together. So much movement in the front line, Garcia moving around and finding space.
Played back just inside the box, shot fired over the bar. Spain certainly the better team at the moment.
20:34 , Matt Verri
33 mins: Space opens up for Spain in behind the German defence. Should get the shot away but it’s overplayed and the chance goes. Germany’s high line is starting to look vulnerable again.
Spain have gone back to dominating the ball, pushed Germany right back.
20:31 , Matt Verri
30 mins: Popp with a poor pass back, straight to a red shirt. Luckily for her, she’s clattered just after and wins a free-kick.
As lucky as you can be when left in a heap on the floor...
Malik Ouzia at the Brentford Community Stadium
20:28 , Matt Verri
This is developing into a cracker of a game, so much intensity and a bit of needle between the sides, too. It’s almost a shame that it’s a goalkeeping error that is responsible for difference between them at the moment.
20:28 , Matt Verri
27 mins: Garcia runs at Rauch, knocks it past the defender and wins the free-kick. Yellow card for Rauch too, she’ll miss the next match through suspension.
Great position this for Spain. They’ve got six players in the six-yard box. Whipped in with pace to the near post, headed away. Popp there again.
20:25 , Matt Verri
25 mins: Germany seeing more of the ball now, getting control of the match again after that good ten-minute spell for Spain.
Cross whipped in, Panos off her line and punches away. Not hugely convincing but it does the job.
20:22 , Matt Verri
22 mins: Buhl plays it to Dabritz, who goes skipping past the challenges and into the area. Beats a couple but eventually a Spanish leg comes in. Corner Germany.
Paredes there in her own six-yard box to head it away to safety.
20:19 , Matt Verri
19 mins: Brilliant effort!
A lovely move from Spain, played back to Caldentey who is just outside the box. One touch out of her feet, another to send a curling effort towards the top corner. Frohms was not confident that was going wide.
Spain growing into this, causing Germany more and more problems.
20:18 , Matt Verri
17 mins: Free-kick swung deep into the Germany box, Popp is back and gets a good header away.
One thing you can guarantee - Spain won’t lose their patience. They’ll keep taking their time in possession all night if they have to.
20:14 , Matt Verri
14 mins: Germany nearly through on goal after a swift counter. Paredes had to scramble across rapidly, as the white shirts came flooding forward.
Again Germany very happy to let Spain have the ball, but they look so dangerous when they win it back.
Malik Ouzia at the Brentford Community Stadium
20:13 , Matt Verri
I saw Aitana Bonmati run the show for Barcelona against Arsenal at the Emirates earlier this season and after Germany’s fast start, she’s growing in influence. I swear to you, she never once looks down at the ball when she’s in possession. Wonderful player.
20:11 , Matt Verri
10 mins: MASSIVE CHANCE!
Wonderful pass slid through the German defence and Garcia is clean through on goal. Goes round the goalkeeper, forces her a bit too wide and as she stretches she can only fire it into the side netting.
Spain really should be level.
20:09 , Matt Verri
9 mins: Spain getting plenty of possession but Germany waiting for any sign of a loose pass into midfield and then they’re absolutely flying into the press.
Very nearly win it high up again - Spain just about get away with it. Leads to Caldentey putting a low cross into the box, booted away at the near post.
20:07 , Matt Verri
6 mins: Spain conceded in the opening minute against Finland. A bit better this time... not much!
Magull driving into the box, Germany threatening again but Paredes is across quickly and defends the situation well.
Malik Ouzia at the Brentford Community Stadium.
20:06 , Matt Verri
That is an absolute howler from Sandra Paños. There’s a Spanish journalist a couple of seats along from me who has almost put her head through the desk.
GOAL! Germany 1-0 Spain | Klara Buhl 3'
20:04 , Matt Verri
GERMANY TAKE THE LEAD!
Disaster from Panos in goal for Spain! Ball played back to her, she passes it straight to to Buhl in the box.
The German brings it under her control, onto her left foot and finishes really calmly. Absolute gift but she’s taken full advantage.
20:02 , Matt Verri
1 mins: Confident start from Spain, work it nicely down the left and they win a corner inside 30 seconds.
Decent delivery, Garcia gets across her marker at the near post and flicks it on but nobody in a red shirt can get on the end of it.
KICK-OFF!
20:00 , Matt Verri
We’re up and running!
19:59 , Matt Verri
National anthems done, coin toss done... we’re pretty much ready!
Very good crowd in at the Brentford Community Stadium. Everything set up for it to be a memorable evening - just the small matter of the players delivering.
Not long now!
19:54 , Matt Verri
Kick-off coming up in just a few minutes.
So much anticipation for this match, have to hope it lives up to expectations. It should be really entertaining, particularly if one side goes in front.
Defeat for either team tonight and their hopes of finishing top of Group B are likely over.
Vilda: Schuller absence won’t change match
19:48 , Matt Verri
Reminder that Schuller is not playing tonight for Germany, after testing positive for Covid.
However, Spain coach Jorge Vilda believes that will not have a major impact on the result tonight, insisting Germany have enough quality to cope with that absence.
“Germany does not depend on any one player, they have a top-class squad,” Vilda said.
“I don’t think it will change the match. They have plenty of options.”

"Probably the most-eagerly anticipated match of the entire group-stage."

Just over 30 minutes to go until kick-off.
We’ve have a few big teams already lay down markers in the tournament, England and France both particularly impressive.
Stage is set for one of these two to follow suit and establish themselves as one of the favourites to go all the way.
Lionesses on the horizon...
19:19 , Matt Verri
Runner-up of Group B, likely to be whoever loses tonight, will face England in the quarter-finals and confidence is high in the Lionesses camp.
England captain Leah Williamson says they fear no one after they booked a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2022 with an 8-0 thrashing of Norway last night.
The Lionesses ran out comfortable winners in Brighton, setting a new record for the most goals scored in a European Championship game — both men’s and women’s.
Georgia Stanway started the rout with a penalty in the 12th minute and England score five more before the break, with Beth Mead and Ellen White finding the net twice and Lauren Hemp also getting in on the act.
Mead completed her hat-trick in the second half, meaning she is now the tournament’s top scorer, and substitute Alessia Russo also got on the scoresheet.
High hopes!

Opening matches...
18:48 , Matt Verri
It was a dreadful start for Spain in their first match, falling behind against Finland inside the opening minute. They were ahead by half-time though, and went on to win 4-1 as they eased to victory late on.
There were no scares at all for Germany, who scored twice in both halves to beat Denmark 4-0.
Four goals each, nine in total in their first ganes. Goals tonight? Let’s hope so!
Prediction
18:30 , Matt Verri
It should be an entertaining affair this evening.
Both sides were impressive in their opening group-stage matches and know that losing tonight will effectively end their hopes of finishing top of Group B.
Spain looked shaky at the back though against Finland, and Germany will be far more ruthless in taking advantage of that.
Germany to win, 2-1.
Team news
18:17 , Matt Verri
Germany will be without striker Lea Schuller tonight after she tested positive for Covid, while Spain are once again having to copy with the absence of Alexia Putellas after she suffered a torn ACL just before the tournament began.
Marina Hegering, Lena Oberdorf and Irene Paredes are among those across the two sides that will be suspended for the next match if they pick up a yellow card tonight.
