Old rivals meet in the UEFA Nations League on Monday night as Germany host the Netherlands at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

First and second in the group as things stand, a win for either would put them in a strong position to reach the Nations League finals. Both teams are without key figures in what should be an entertaining encounter, following a 2-2 draw between the sides earlier in the competition.

Here is all you need to know about the clash.

Germany have taken seven points from their three Nations League games to date, while their only defeat in 12 fixtures in 2024 was the quarter-final exit to eventual winners Spain at Euro 2024. That run includes impressive wins over France and Monday’s opponents, the Netherlands.

Deniz Undav’s double secured a 2-1 win in Bosnia on Friday night with the former Brighton forward emerging as a real threat for Julian Nagelsmann’s side. Undav has now scored three goals in five caps for the national team, having posted a record of 22 goals in 36 Bundesliga games since swapping the Premier League for Stuttgart.

With Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz unavailable, there will added onus on Florian Wirtz to be the creative spark for Germany. The 21-year-old was named Bundesliga Player of the Year in 2023/24, after helping Bayer Leverkusen to a maiden title success. He has six goals in 10 games across all competitions for Leverkusen so far this season.

Consecutive draws have seen the Netherlands fall two points behind Germany in the group after the Oranje were held in Hungary on Friday. A late Denzel Dumfries goal rescued a point for the Dutch after Roland Sallai’s opener at the Puskas Arena.

It’s just three wins in their last eight games for Ronald Koeman’s side, though the Netherlands impressed to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024 in the summer.

Virgil van Dijk is a big absence for the clash in Germany, with the Liverpool centre-back ruled out through suspension. Spurs defender Micky van de Ven is expected to deputise at left-back in the absences of Nathan Ake, Jurrien Timber and Quilindschy Hartman through injury.

Last Meeting

Netherlands 2-2 Germany, UEFA Nations League, 10th September 2024

Tijjani Reijnders opened the scoring inside 100 seconds for the home side, though Germany turned the game around before half-time. Deniz Undav equalised, before Joshua Kimmich hit a second at the back post in first-half stoppage-time.

But just five minutes into the second half the Dutch levelled when Denzel Dumfries fired home to earn the Oranje a point.
