AC Milan want to recruit a new central midfielder in the January transfer window, and a new name has reportedly emerged as a target.

Last night Youssouf Fofana was not at his best as he gave away the ball for Cagliari’s equaliser, failing to stop the counter by letting his man go past. It was not his tidiest display but it is almost understandable, given how many minutes he has been asked to play.

While Yunus Musah could be an interesting alternative to work on, and with Ismael Bennacer needing some time to get close to 100% after a long time out, Fofana and Tijjani Reijnders are being ‘perpetually forced to do overtime’.

In terms of targets, La Gazzetta dello Sport report that there is a name which had remained under the radar but now is the subject of more intense contacts: Lucas Gourna-Douath, of Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga.

He is one of the profiles being monitored on the list, as a natural defensive midfielder who excels with his physicality and athleticism shielding the back four. The 21-year-old could therefore be the ideal deputy to Fofana.

The rest of the shopping list features the ‘usual suspects’: Reda Belahyane (Verona), Warren Bondo (Monza) and the more expensive Morten Frendrup (Genoa), an ‘obsession’ of the Rossoneri management.
