Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has become the majority shareholder in Football League side Salford City.

Neville has acquired business partner Peter Lim’s stake in the club, ending the Singapore billionaire’s decade-long relationship with Salford.

As reported by The Mirror, Lim’s 40% stake is now owned by Neville, with additional members of the Class of ‘92 still controlling the remaining 60%.

The club released a statement confirming the news and thanking Lim for his support with the venture.

“We cannot thank Peter enough for his support, friendship, belief and loyalty to us for over 10 years, not only in Salford City but in other projects that we have worked on together,” the statement read.

“Peter has been integral in helping to create a legacy at Salford City that we are now determined to build on.”

Neville was joined by Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and brother Phil in forming the partnership with Lim 10 years ago.

Since then, Salford have enjoyed a fine rise through the leagues, winning an impressive five promotions in nine seasons.

However, despite boasting the biggest wage bill in League Two, the team is struggling to make the jump to League One.

There has been plenty of movement in key roles at Salford since the Class of ’92 takeover, with Neville taking a back seat in recent years.

Neville previously served as CEO since joining as a co-owner but stepped down from the position to focus on his other responsibilities outside of the club.

Nicky Butt replaced Neville in the role but the club are still stuck in the fourth tier of English football.

Salford have also found it hard to stick with a manager in recent times, having employed five different head coaches since taking over in 2014.

Neville and co will be hoping for more stability going into the new season with Karl Robinson the latest man charged with the task of securing promotion.
