Gamecock great A’ja Wilson leading Team USA women’s basketball into medal round

A’ja Wilson has continued to dominate for Team USA women’s basketball at the Paris Olympics.

Wilson — the former national champion at South Carolina, two-time WNBA MVP and Olympic gold medalist — put up 14 points, three rebounds, two assists, four steals and one block in the team’s 87-68 win Sunday over Germany in Lille, France.

In the teams’ first two games of pool play, the South Carolina native put up 24 and 23 points. Her stat line has helped Team USA enter medal games with an undefeated record.

“We came here to go to Paris (for the latter stages), and that’s the main goal,” Wilson said following the 19 point win. “I’m glad that we were able to do this. We’re going to enjoy it, but we’re not satisfied.

Wilson was particularly impactful in the third and fourth quarters Sunday, when her defensive stops led to pivotal buckets.

This year’s team is stacked with the league’s top players, including Breanna Stewart, Kelsey Plum and Sabrina Ionescu. It’s an advantage that Wilson hopes will lead Team USA to another gold.

“It’s incredible,” Wilson said. “That’s what makes us legendary. That’s what makes us one of the best teams in the world, that we can sub five in, five out, and there’s no drop-off.”

On the court, Team USA’s chemistry is evident — the all-star roster is able to play to each other’s strengths and make quick adjustments on the court.

Despite not having played together for long, Wilson believes their team dynamic has significantly contributed to their high caliber play.

“There’s a lot of great players out there, but I think we have probably one of the best locker rooms I’ve ever been a part of,” Wilson said. “We’re just really fun. We’re gelling together. You’d be surprised that we just got together right after (WNBA) All Stars.”

Moving forward, Wilson plans to continue to improve her footwork and defensive presence.

Wilson and Team USA will take on Nigeria in the quarterfinal round Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

“It’s not going to be easy,” Wilson said. “But we’re definitely going to have fun while doing it.”
