“A game like that must never happen to us again.” – Waldemar Anton on Borussia Dortmund’s defeat to VfB Stuttgart

On Sunday afternoon, Borussia Dortmund were embarrassed 5-1 away to VfB Stuttgart in a game that exposed the inexperience of their head coach Nuri Şahin.

Despite making changes to the structure of the team at half-time to make up for Die Schwarzgelben heading into the break 2-0 down, Şahin’s adjustments only held Dortmund back, allowing Die Roten to score a further three goals.

However, in all honesty, it could have been worse for BvB, with Şahin explaining after the final whistle that a Dortmund side can never perform like that regardless of the circumstances.

Nevertheless, for Waldemar Anton, it was a defeat that would have felt even more crushing, having left Stuttgart earlier in the summer to sign for the Black and Yellows.

Speaking to DAZN after the game, the 28-year-old commented on Die Schwarzgelben’s performances, as well as the relentless booing aimed at him by the home fans:

“We didn’t play well today. The basics were missing today. We had the ball at times, which was OK. But defensively, we weren’t good today. We definitely have to think about why that was. We’ll definitely have to discuss that in the next few days. A game like that must never happen to us again.”

“Of course, I knew what was coming. I hope that the whole story is over now. The fans got what they wanted. Nevertheless, it’s OK now. I’ll carry on. We’ll analyse the game. We’ll sit down and say very clearly that it wasn’t a good game and what wasn’t good.”

This was not the first time Dortmund had shown signs of struggle this season, and with a home clash against local neighbours VfL Bochum on Friday evening, it will certainly not get any easier for Şahin’s side, who will need to show that their performance against Stuttgart will not happen again.
