'It's Frustrating': Devils Make Costly Mistakes In 4-3 Overtime Loss to Maple Leafs
In his return to Toronto and Scotiabank Arena, New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe saw his team once again fall in overtime to his former team.
The Toronto Maple Leafs earned a 4-3 victory over the Devils, with William Nylander scoring in extra time to seal his team's third victory over New Jersey in 2024-25.
"Disappointing," Nico Hischier said to NJD.TV. "We have addressed some in overtime and we made mistakes that should not happen again, and that is why it's frustrating. [...] overtime is all about puck possession, and you can't make a mistake."
It marked the regular season finale between New Jersey and Toronto, with the Devils earning a 0-1-2 record. Jacob Markstom was in goal for all three games.
Jack Hughes opened the scoring 2:21 into the first period. Displaying patience and beautiful hands, the 23-year-old net his 18th goal of the season.
After the Maple Leafs tied the game in the second period, Nico Hischier was tripped up by opposing defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson. New Jersey's captain capitalized on the power play, scoring to give his team a 2-1 lead going into the second intermission.
In the third period, Toronto's captain, Auston Matthews, tied the game at 2-2. Hischier scored his second power-play goal of the game two minutes later for a 3-2 New Jersey lead.
Matthews scored his second of the game late in the third period to tie the game and force overtime.
Jack Hughes finished the game with three points (one goal, two assists). It marked the 36th game in his career where he earned three, or more, points. Additionally, it was his 96th career multi-point game, which tied Scott Niedermayer for the 10th most multi-point games in franchise history.
With his two goals on the man advantage, Hischier is up to eight power-play goals this season, which marked a new career-high.
The Devils have a busy upcoming schedule with back-to-back matinee games in New Jersey on Saturday and Sunday.
