Friday night lights: Lee’s Summit North tops Mill Valley in Missouri-Kansas clash
Friday night’s battle between Lee’s Summit North and Mill Valley — the top two teams in the Kansas City metro high school football rankings — lived up to its billing ... until one of the Metro’s top players put it away.
Lee’s Summit North, ranked No. 1 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, topped No. 2 Mill Valley 26-13 in Shawnee. The Broncos led by just six, 19-13, entering the fourth quarter. But star senior receiver Isaiah Mozee tiptoed down the sideline for a 23-yard reception that set up a game-sealing touchdown reception two plays later.
Mozee took a pass in the flat, found a seam on the right side and streaked for a 20-yard score and a 26-13 Lee’s Summit North lead with 11 minutes, 52 seconds left.
Mozee, who has committed to playing in college for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, finished with nine receptions for 106 yards.
Mill Valley, the five-time defending Kansas Class 5A state champion, mounted a drive to get inside the 10-yard line with under 6:30 to go but came up short on fourth down at the 6.
Lee’s Summit North (3-0) built a 17-0 lead early. Senior running back Quade Chatmon rushed for 51 yards to set up a 2-yard TD in the opening quarter, then scored again on an 8-yard run with 10:25 to go until halftime.
Mill Valley got its ground game going a bit as time grew short until intermission. Senior quarterback Connor Bohon hit Blake Jay for a 25-yard TD and it was 17-7 at the break.
Junior tailback Reggie Reece, who eclipsed 100 yards on the ground, jetted for a 24-yard run early in the third period to set up an 11-yard TD strike in the back of the end zone. Bohon found Isaac Sauder with 9:33 and it was 17-13.
After holding the Broncos, the Jaguars eventually had to punt. That’s when a bad snap resulted in a safety and a 19-13 lead with 32 seconds to go in the third quarter.
Lee’s Summit North will play host to Arkansas power Bentonville next Friday, while Mill Valley plays host to Free State.
Rockhurst 42, Olathe North 25
Rockhurst was dominant in every sense of the word.
The Hawklets, No. 3 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, scored the game’s first 28 points, including three touchdowns in the first quarter. Rockhurst totaled almost 300 yards in the first half alone.
The meeting was the first between the two KC-area powers since 1999.
Junior running back Pierce Fisher accounted for two Rockhurst TDs on runs of eight and 22 yards. Mix in a pair of TD passes, one an 87-yard gainer from senior quarterback Charlie Loose to sophomore Blake Thomas, and the score ballooned to 28-0 with 6:39 to play in the first half.
Olathe North was able to avoid the first-half shutout as Jamo Sarver and Sam Simmons connected on an 8-yard pass with 21 seconds remaining until halftime.
“I’m really happy with the way our guys played, especially offensively,” Hawklets coach Kelly Donohoe said. “We had a little bit of a letdown defensively in the third quarter, and we definitely have room for improvement, believe me, but we feel good after week three with where we are at.”
Each team scored on a TD pass in the third quarter, but Rockhurst was able to block the Eagles’ PAT and led 35-13 through three periods.
Olathe North scored a pair of touchdowns over the final 12 minutes, but that wasn’t enough to climb out of a 28-point deficit.
The Hawklets (3-0) are at home again next week against Lee’s Summit West, while Olathe North (0-2) welcomes Lawrence to town next Friday.
