CMS tightens security protocols at local games

Beginning with games Friday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will tighten security at athletic events.

No elementary or middle school student will be allowed in high school games without a parent or guardian. No student should be dropped off and left unattended.

All spectators, including children, will be expected to sit in the bleachers at all times during the game. Refusal to do so will result in their removal from the venue. No refunds will be given.

Those spectators are allowed to go to the concession stand or restroom, but must return immediately to their seats.

The district said that school resource officers, additional hired officers, athletic directors and other school personnel will assist in enforcing these procedures.

This week, Mooresville schools put in similar protocols after several area schools were evacuated due to bomb threats.

CMS partners with Honest Game to ensure students’ eligibility

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has partnered with the Honest Game Foundation to help make sure local student-athletes are college eligible.

The district hopes to break the link between income and academic achievement in order to make sure students from all socio-economic backgrounds have equal opportunities to college education.

The partnership between CMS and Honest Game Foundation is funded by Gatorade’s multi-year Fuel Tomorrow commitment. The district claims that, through the new alliance, 70 percent of its schools are now on track with approved courses necessary for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) eligibility. And starting this year, Honest Game will work with CMS staff, students and families to create roadmaps for each student.

“We understand the power sports have to change lives,” said Ericia Turner, CMS athletic director. “Our district takes great pride in supporting our students, not only in competition but also in the classroom. Our partnership with Honest Game gives us the data we need to help more families and student-athletes chart a course to achieve their college dreams.”

According to Honest Game, nearly 1 million student-athletes are declared academically ineligible for college due to avoidable or recoverable errors like taking classes that do not meet NCAA requirements. Among athletes from underserved communities, that number is one in two.

“Honest Game gives a clear picture of where your student is,” Rocky River athletic director Orlando Gray said, “and I think if our parents and our students and our staff will really buy into it. I expect we will see more production from our student-athletes.”
