Friday’s boys’ prep basketball rewind: Butler upsets No. 9 Independence in rivalry game

Terrance Badio scored 15 points to help Butler pull off a 56-44 upset win over Southwestern 4A rival Independence. Coming into the game, Independence was unbeaten in conference play.

That unbeaten run ended Friday thanks to Butler’s execution on both sides of the ball, which helped snap the Bulldogs’ two-game losing streak and stopped Independence’s five-game winning streak.

Both teams were evenly matched until the second quarter.

Despite Badio leaving the game with a lower body injury halfway through the second quarter, Butler held Independence to only two points in the period.

Huge 3-pointers from Butler guards Aree Branch and Caleb Milligan helped the Bulldogs outscore the Patriots 15-2 in the second quarter to end the half 25-14.

Badio returned after halftime and got his team going, with a variety of drives to the rim.

Independence couldn’t close the gap as the Patriots began to break down defensively and Butler continued to score easy baskets and finished the game with a victory.

“We did what we were supposed to do, we played together, no selfish basketball and we cut out the turnovers, we got rebounds and knocked threes.” Badio said after the game.

Butler coach Patrick King hoped the rivalry game might give his team a little extra incentive to play its best basketball.

“Our guys looked forward to this game,” Butler coach Patrick King said. “We knew we had to punch first and our guys were ready for the moment.”

Butler improves to 10-7, 4-2 and will face non-conference opponent Corvian Community on Saturday. Corvian reached the NCHSAA 1A state championship game last year.

Despite the loss, Independence (14-3, 5-1) and will remain on top of the Southwestern 4A and will travel to face Ambassador Christian next Friday.
