Friday’s boys’ high school basketball rewind: Lincolnton holds off rival Bunker Hill
Lincolnton High School got 24 points from sophomore LJ Smith IV and beat rival Bunker Hill 66-60 Friday night.
Lincolnton (13-4, 7-1 Catawba Valley) trailed Bunker Hill (2-16, 1-7) halfway through the third quarter.
Smith, however, scored 12 points in the final quarter and Lincolnton ended the game on a 28-18 run after trailing 42-38 with 4:04 left in the third quarter.
Charlie Foster added 14 points for Lincolnton with Aiden Cox getting 16 points to lead Bunker Hill.

Friday’s boys’ #BIG5 top performers
Myles Howard, South Mecklenburg: The Sabres beat Olympic 64-57, winning for the fifth time in six games. Howard had a team-high 18 points.
DJ Lindsey, Charlotte Country Day: The Bucs freshman had a team-high 25 points in an 82-80 win over Cannon School. Sean Nix had 37 for Cannon.
Jordan Patterson, West Iredell: Patterson, a senior guard, had 39 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals against Hickory’s St. Stephens High.
Doug Quarles, Corvian Community: In a 74-64 win over Lincoln Charter, Quarles had 18 points, 12 rebounds. Corvian, which began the season 0-4, is 10-1 since with the lone loss to N.C. 2A state championship favorite Reidsville.
Kyri Wilson, Mooresville: In a 78-49 win over Cox Mill, Wilson had a triple-double, notching 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

No. 2 Providence Day 67, Covenant Day 53: Nick Hailey’s 19 points helped the Chargers to a CISAA road victory. Jonah Lawrence added 13 for Providence Day.
No. 5 Chambers 108, West Mecklenburg 36: Markus Kerr scored 20 points and carried the Cougars (12-6, 7-1) to a lopsided Queen City 3A-4A victory. Tarris Bouie III had 18 points and five assists, and Malik McCotter added 11 points and six assists.
No. 6 Mooresville 78, Cox Mill 49: The Blue Devils bounced back from Wednesday’s loss to Lake Norman with a solid Greater Metro 4 4A victory. Dylan Clark scored 24 points, and Kyri Wilson logged a triple-double, with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
Ambassador Christian 57, No. 10 Independence 49: Ambassador Christian won its seventh in a row, as Judah King scored 17 points and Logan Johnson added 15.
No. 13 Ardrey Kell 62, Cuthbertson 49: Braden Suggs (17 points) and Brett Freeman (15) led the visiting Knights (14-3) to their second victory in as many nights. Cuthbertson fell to 10-4.
No. 16 Weddington 70, Marvin Ridge 54: Mason Zepp scored 18 points, and K.J. Younger added 15, as the Warriors improved to 2-0 in the Southern Carolina 4A. Henry Smith scored 19 for Marvin Ridge, now 1-1 in the conference.
Ashbrook 79, Stuart Cramer 43: The Green Wave pulled away from the pesky Storm in the second half and improved to 8-0 in the Big South 3A. Stuart Cramer climbed within 34-24 in the third quarter, but Ashbrook scored eight straight, on two baskets by Ayron Jackson and one apiece by Jayden Armstrong and Issac Byers Jr.
Butler 63, Garinger 33: Isaiah Keys had 13 points, and 10 players scored, as the Bulldogs trounced the Wildcats in a Southwestern 4A contest.
Charlotte Catholic 63, Providence 47: Jack Siegel scored a game-high 17 points, and Ben Bergren added 16, as the Cougars scored a Southwestern 4A victory and remained second in the conference behind Independence. Latimer Taylor topped Providence with 14.
Charlotte Country Day 82, Cannon School 80: The visiting Buccaneers edged the Lions in this high-scoring CISAA affair. Cannon got 37 points from Sean Nix. Freshman D.J. Lindsey led the victorious Buccaneers with 25.
Concord 77, South Rowan 45: Ty Rushmeyer scored 20 points and Jayden Beyan added 18, as the Spiders cruised to a South Piedmont 3A victory.
Corvian Community 74, Lincoln Charter 64: The Cardinals captured this first-place showdown in the Catawba Shores 1A-2A and won for the 10th time in 11 games. Doug Quarles had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and R.J. Moore Jr. scored a team-high 19 points. McKennon Showers scored 19 for Lincoln Charter.
East Mecklenburg 43, Rocky River 39: James McIver’s 13 points led the Eagles past the Ravens in a Southwestern 4 A game. Jayden Ross scored 15 for Rocky River.
Hickory 73, East Lincoln 68: East Lincoln, which started the week with a 6-0 record in the Western Foothills 3A, lost its second straight conference game. The Mustangs are now tied with Hickory, North Lincoln and Statesville for first place.
Highland Tech 72, East Gaston 36: Elijah Sherrill scored three baskets in the Rams’ 12-0 run to start the game and finished with 32 points. He scored 26 of those in the first half of this Southern Piedmont 1A-2A game.
Jay M. Robinson 69, Lake Norman Charter 64: The visiting Bulldogs (15-2, 9-0 South Piedmont 3A) survived a scare from Lake Norman Charter. The Knights (5-9, 4-6) scored with six seconds left and trailed 67-64, but they were unable to steal the ball on Jay Robinson’s inbounds pass and had to foul. The Bulldogs then made two clinching free throws. Jarrel Reid (14 points) led four Jay Robinson players in double figures. Collin Mcconnyhead topped the Knights with 21.
Mallard Creek 58, West Charlotte 54: The host Mavericks held on to win this battle of third place in the Queen City 3A-4A. Mallard Creek is 5-3, West Charlotte 4-4.
Myers Park 72, Ballantyne Ridge 30: The Mustangs led only 26-19 at the half but blew it open with a 27-6 surge in the third quarter. The victory left Myers Park at 5-2 in the SoMeck 4A, in a first-place tie.
North Lincoln 68, Statesville 49: Ty Sanders (16 points) and Ben Heavner (13) carried the Knights past the Greyhounds and helped create a four-way tie atop the Western Foothills 3A.
St. Stephens 87, West Iredell 85: Jordan Patterson scored 39 points and added 11 rebounds for West Iredell in this Western Piedmont 3A contest.
South Mecklenburg 64, Olympic 57: Once night after losing a close game to Ardrey Kell, the Sabres bounced back with a big SoMeck 4A win. Myles Howard led the victors with 18 points. South Mecklenburg is 5-2 in the conference, tied for first with Myers Park. Olympic slipped to 4-3.
