Ons Jabeur 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 Olga Danilovic

That’s a big test passed from Ons Jabeur! The Tunisian comes through a battle with an inspired Danilovic, who made life extremely hard for Jabeur to begin with. But the seventh seed turned it around and figured out the answers to break Danilovic down.

“I need my tennis to improve for the next match,” says Jabeur - and next up is the unseeded Bernarda Pera.

French Open 2023: Ruud and Rune close on Roland Garros rematch

19:07 , Jamie Braidwood

Casper Ruud and Holger Rune are closing in on a French Open rematch after both reached the fourth round on Saturday.

The pair contested a heated late-night quarter-final 12 months ago, with Ruud triumphing in four sets before Rune accused him of a “lack of class” for celebrating in his face, something the Norwegian denied.

They have played once since, in Rome a couple of weeks ago, when Rune gained some revenge, and will be favoured to clash in the last eight once again.

Ruud went on to reach his first grand slam final here last year and then repeated the feat at the US Open, although he came out on the losing side both times.

This season has been a struggle by contrast but there are signs the 24-year-old is starting to find his form and he recovered from a set down to beat China’s Zhang Zhizhen 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-4.

Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 6-1 Bianca Andreescu

Hopes were high for Bianca Andreescu after the Canadian picked up a couple of wins at Roland Garros, but Lesia Tsurenko has firmly closed the door as the Ukrainian advances to the fourth round and a meeting with Iga Swiatek.

“She’s the biggest challenge - one of the biggest challenges right now,“ Tsurenko says. "She's number 1, she's a clay-court specialist, I just had a match against her and it wasn't really good - it was good, but Iga is too good.

"But I'm really excited to play against her because it's a good challenge and it's a good way of improving your own game."

Tsurenko was defeated by Swiatek 6-0 6-2 in Rome.

Coco Gauff 6-7 6-1 6-1 Mirra Andreeva

That’s an excellent turnaround from Coco Gauff, who ends Mirra Andreeva’s run at Roland Garros to return to the fourth round. The American was utterly dominant when her serve improved after losing the first-set tiebreak. Andreeva will be back - the Russian looks a special talent and played very well in the first hour of the match.

Gauff post-match: “Mirra, she’s super young and there’s a big future for her. I remember playing here at 16 and she has a lot to look forward to. And you guys will hopefully see ... many matches between the two of us.”

French Open: Rafael Nadal undergoes successful surgery

14:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Rafael Nadal is expected to be out for five more months following surgery on his left hip.

The 22-time grand slam champion underwent the procedure on Friday evening at a clinic in Barcelona.

Nadal’s team issued an update on Saturday saying the arthroscopic procedure on his left psoas tendon went well, with the damaged areas cleaned and reinforced, while an old labrum injury was also addressed.

The Spaniard, who turned 37 on Saturday, suffered the injury at the Australian Open in January and had expected to only be out for six to eight weeks.

But repeated efforts to rehabilitate it did not work and last month Nadal announced he would miss the French Open for the first time since 2004.

Result! Casper Ruud 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-4 Zhizhen Zhang

Impressive from Casper Ruud - who advances to the last 16 of the French Open for the fourth consecutive year! That wasn’t easy - Zhang made it difficult to begin with - but Ruud got stronger as the match went on and found a way to get the win. The fourth seed will need to be more consistent in the next round if he is to match last year’s effort and reach the final - but he’s given himself the chance to improve at least.

Rybakina said: “I was not feeling good already yesterday and the day before, so I didn’t sleep two nights and had some fever. Today I really tried in the warm-up but I feel that the right decision is to withdraw, because it’s really tough to play with these conditions.

“I saw the doctor and they said that actually it’s all a virus here in Paris. I guess with my allergy, immune system just went down and I picked up something. It’s difficult to perform and obviously to run and even breathe. So I think that was the only right decision I could make.

“Today I just wanted to give 100 per cent and obviously I’m far from being 100 per cent. It was unlucky for me. I just try to recover and do my best to be prepared for the grass season already.”

Fourth seed Elena Rybakina forced to withdraw from French Open

11:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Elena Rybakina has been forced to withdraw from the French Open due to illness, shortly before her third-round match.

The Kazakhstani 23-year-old, who was born in Russia, was due to face unseeded Spanish opponent Sara Sorribes Tormo on Philippe-Chartrier Court to open play on Saturday morning.

While Rybakina was out on the clay surface an hour earlier, doing some warm-ups and practice shots, news broke just before the allotted start time that she was withdrawing from the tournament, handing a walkover to Sorribes Tormo - meaning a first-ever appearance in the round of 16 for her.

In a short press conference confirming her departure, Rybakina revealed she had been suffering over the past 24 hours since beating Linda Noskova in the second round on Thursday.

“I didn’t feel well yesterday, I had a high fever, headaches and I didn’t sleep. Today it is the same. I’m far from being 100 per cent,” she said.

Aryna Sabalenka did not undertake her usual media duties at the French Open citing mental health concerns after her third-round win over Kamilla Rakhimova.

“These questions do not bother me after my matches. I know that I have to provide answers to the media on things not related to my tennis or my matches but, on Wednesday, I did not feel safe in the press conference.

“I should be able to feel safe when I do interviews with the journalists after my matches. For my own mental health and well-being, I have decided to take myself out of this situation today, and the tournament has supported me in this decision.”

Cameron Norrie criticised his own attitude and performance after his French Open campaign ended with a straight-sets loss to Lorenzo Musetti in the third round.

It is the third year in a row the British number one has fallen in the last 32, and he only managed to mount any real challenge in the third set before going down 6-1 6-2 6-4.

There is certainly no disgrace in losing to 21-year-old Musetti, who is ranked only five places below Norrie and whose best surface is clay, but the 14th seed was hugely disappointed by the manner of what is one of his worst grand slam losses in terms of scoreline.

The result, meanwhile, brings an end to British singles hopes at a tournament where only three players even made the start line.

“I came out very flat and I’m disappointed with the attitude in the first couple of sets,” said a very downbeat Norrie.

“It was very, very slow conditions, very heavy, and I was not prepared for it to be that slow. For me, I can play bad and everything, but I was just very flat and disappointed to have a performance like that.

“The first two sets he didn’t really do too much and he was up two sets to love. For a player like myself, I can’t afford to give that much of an edge.

“There is no excuses to play the level that I did today. I missed so many easy short balls and I lost so many points within a couple of shots where usually I can win a lot of those ones.

“I didn’t come prepared. I was changing rackets throughout the match. It was a bit colder today but I’m good enough to not let that bother me.”

Novak Djokovic admitted he is dealing with a number of physical problems after fighting off a terrific challenge from Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to reach the fourth round of the French Open for a 14th consecutive year.

The 7-6 (4) 7-6 (5) 6-2 victory took three hours and 36 minutes, with Djokovic twice a break down in the first set and forced to save a set point in the second.

The 22-time grand-slam champion looked unsettled in windy conditions, while he called the trainer before the third set to have his left thigh massaged, but, as he so often does, he found a way to come out on top.

Asked about the medical time-out, Djokovic said: “We don’t have much time to start to name the many injuries I have, and the list is quite long.

“I still kept on playing. These are the circumstances that you, as a professional athlete, have to deal with. Accept it. Sometimes you need help from (a) physio during the match. Sometimes you need pills. Sometimes you need help from the god or angels, or whoever.

“The reality for me nowadays is that my body is responding differently than it did a few years ago. I managed to finish the match.”

The French Open nears the end of its first week at Roland Garros as the third continues on Saturday with Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina among those looking to book their place in the last -16.

Defending champion Swiatek takes on Wang Xinyu of China while Rybakina, who is so far leading the challenge to dethrone Swiatek in Paris, faces Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo. The match of the day, however, is a contest between last year’s finalist Coco Gauff and 16-year-old breakout star Mirra Andreeva.

Cameron Norrie’s campaign ended in disappointing fashion with a straight-sets loss to Lorenzo Musetti on Friday, while Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka continued to navigate off-court controversies at Roland Garros to advance to the fourth round.

Djokovic beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina amid the fall-out of his decision to write “Kosovo is the heart of Serbia” on the camera after his first-round victory, as the Serbian continued his bid to win a men’s record 23rd grand slam.

Sabalenka resumed her bid for consecutive grand slam titles with a straight-sets win against Kamilla Rakhimova. It came after she was confronted by a Ukrainian journalist following her second-round win and afterwards, Sabalenka did not undertake her usual media duties citing mental health concerns.
