French Open 2021: Serena Williams advances to fourth round with win over Danielle Rose Collins

Serena Williams advances to fourth round

Serena Williams didn't give Danielle Rose Collins a shot at an upset in the third round of the 2021 French Open. Williams needed just two sets to defeat Collins, winning the match 6-4, 6-4.

Williams ran into some trouble in the second set, losing four straight games before rallying back to win the set.

Williams — ranked No. 7 — will take on No. 22 Elena Rybakina in the fourth round. That match will take place Sunday.

Following Aryna Sabalenka's loss, and Naomi Osaka and Ash Barty bowing out of the event, Williams remains one of the highest seeded women to remain in the tournament.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova stuns Aryna Sabalenka to move to fourth round

The top-seeded women's player at the 2021 French Open fell in the third round. Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka — the world's No. 3 — was upset by Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova — ranked No. 31— in the third round of the tournament.

Pavlyuchenkova battled back against Sabalenka to take the first set 6-4. Sabalenka opened the set by taking three straight games, but couldn't hold on to that lead as Pavlyuchenkova fought her way back to take the set.

The second set was another story, as Sabalenka showed why she's ranked No. 3 on the women's side. She took the second set against Pavlyuchenkova 6-2.

After a medical timeout, Pavlyuchenkova completely dominated in the final set. She didn't allow Sabalenka to win a single game, taking the third set 6-0 and advancing to the fourth round.

With the win, Pavlyuchenkova will take on Victoria Azarenka in the fourth round. Pavlyuchenkova will once again be the underdog, as Azarenka is ranked No. 15.

Another top seed falls with Aryna Sabalenka loss

Sabalenka's loss leaves the women's side without its three highest ranked players coming into the French Open. World No. 1 Ash Barty withdrew from the tournament with an injury Thursday. Naomi Osaka — the world's No. 2 — withdrew Monday to focus on her mental wellness.

With Sabalenka's loss, American Sofia Kenin is now the highest-ranked woman remaining in the French Open. Kenin — ranked No. 4 — will take on fellow American Jessica Pegula in the third round of the tournament Saturday. Elina Svitolina — the women's No. 5 — is also still active in the tournament. She'll take on Barbora Krejcikova in the third round Saturday.
