The summer transfer window is well underway and July 1 marks a pivotal point in the trade period. A number of contracts will officially expire, leading to a scramble for the signatures of high-profile free agents.

Kylian Mbappe’s free transfer move to Real Madrid is the defining deal of the summer window. The France captain will link up with the European champions after Euro 2024, having scored a record-breaking 256 goals in 308 games for PSG. It’s a remarkable coup for Carlo Ancelotti’s side even given the cost of his signing-on fee and wages.

Mbappe, however, is not the only free agent that will attract interest and there’s plenty of talent still to be picked up as potential Bosman bargains.

The list of players whose contracts expire later today includes a four-time Champions League winner, a driving force in France’s current challenge at Euro 2024, and the second-highest goalscorers in the histories of Borussia Dortmund and the Netherlands respectively.

Elsewhere there’s a former £72m signing featured on this list, four full France internationals, and two experienced stars who featured in last season’s Champions League final. Liverpool, meanwhile, have waved farewell to a talented (if injury-prone) duo.
