Didier Deschamps feels that Marcus Thuram enjoyed a great season at Inter Milan, but couldn’t reproduce his form for France at EURO 2024.

Speaking after Les Bleus’ exit from the Euros against Spain, via FCInter1908, the France coach gave his thoughts on the 26-year-old Nerazzurri striker.

Thuram came into the Euros this summer as the starter in attack for France.

The Inter striker was earmarked to inherit the starting shirt from former Arsenal, Chelsea, and AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud.

It was not hard to see why based on Thuram’s club form. The 26-year-old had enjoyed an outstanding first season at Inter after moving on a free transfer last summer.

And it was not just in terms of goals and assists that Thuram shone.

The Frenchman also proved to be a very adaptable and versatile striker in the Nerazzurri’s system.

This meant that it seemed as though Thuram could be the perfect puzzle piece to get the best out of the rest of France’s attacking talent.

Deschamps: “Thuram Great Season For Inter, But France A Step Above”

In the group stage, however, Thuram failed to score or assist a goal.

The 26-year-old did not manage to have the kind of impact on matches that he had all season long at Inter.

Therefore, as the knockout stages went on, Thuram lost his place.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Randal Kolo Muani started against Portugal in the quarterfinals, and then in a loss to Spain in the semifinal stage.

Tellingly, Thuram did not even come off the bench against Spain.

Instead it was the veteran Giroud who Les Bleus coach Deschamps turned to while his team were chasing the game.

After the match France coach Deschamps said that “Some of these players are still very young.”

“Thuram for example just had a great season with Inter,” he noted.

“But proving himself with France is a step above.”
