Fort Worth Dunbar’s second half surge not enough in loss to Wichita Falls Memorial

Both Fort Worth Dunbar and Wichita Falls Memorial came into Thursday night’s game at Clark Stadium looking to secure a winning record.

It was Wichita Falls Memorial that came home with the 55-27 win over Dunbar.

“We wanted to get better,” Wichita Falls Memorial head coach Marc Bindel said. “We knew that Dunbar had a good group and they were really athletic so we wanted to try to bounce back.”

Their road to victory started when Jamariean Dean scored for the Memorial Mavericks. The score was 7-0 with 10:53 remaining in the first quarter.

“I just wanted to come out and win, last week we took a tough loss so I just felt like this week we needed to move ourselves and bounce back,” Dean said.

The scores kept coming for Wichita Falls Memorial. Dean also scored the third and fourth touchdowns of the night. The Mavericks led 28-0.

Dean credited their success in this game to playing as a team.

“We just click,” Dean said. “We come out here and we play our game, we talk, we communicate we just play, play to win.”

Bindel said Dean has already grown a lot as a player this season.

“Just like every one of us, he’s a work in progress,” Bindel said. “He didn’t have a great first week, first game. He got better last week and then this week he had a breakout game. That’s just a testament to his hard work and sticking to the plan and trusting the process.”

Another player that Bindel said made major contributions to their win was quarterback Joe Castles.

“We have a very great brotherhood,” Castles said. “We all grew up together it just really helps when you use that on the field and I think that’s what won this game.”

The Wildcats also really wanted that win, being able to put 27 points on the board, but they just weren’t able to keep up with the Mavericks.

“We just had to stop shooting ourselves in the foot and making mistakes and giving unforced errors,” Dunbar head coach Todd Lawson said. “But the kids kept battling and kept fighting. We’re just gonna learn from it, so we’ll just see the outcome at the end of the year.”

Dunbar’s next chance to keep battling will be against Madison at Pleasant Grove Field on September 20.
