Formula 1 granted access to hold Las Vegas Grand Prix on iconic Strip through 2032

Local officials voted Tuesday to allow Formula 1 access to the Las Vegas strip, paving the way for the Las Vegas Grand Prix to be held through 2032, Racer reports.

The Clark County Commission is allowing the race to expand past its initial three-year deal, which was announced in March. The race will be unique in that it will be on Saturday night — instead of Sunday — as the cars speed past iconic Vegas landmarks under the lights of the city.

"We anticipate a lifetime in partnership,” commissioner James Gibson said. “This will open the pathway to be able to do it for at least 10 years. And then beyond that, I’m sure that those who succeed us will see the value in what we’ve done and continue doing it forever.”

“We are grateful for the passage of this resolution by the Board of County Commissioners, which will allow us to further our plans for the Las Vegas Strip Circuit," the Las Vegas Grand Prix said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports. "The 10-year approval provides us with the certainty that race weekend would be available on the calendar through 2032.

"We are currently meeting regularly with dozens of local stakeholders, from our resort partners and neighboring businesses to the Department of Public Works and safety organizations, to finalize plans for the inaugural race and look forward to sharing more information in the coming weeks.”

The motion requests street closures from Wednesday through Sunday the week before Thanksgiving starting this year through 2032. The inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix will be held Nov. 16-18.

“This is an incredible moment for Formula 1 that demonstrates the huge appeal and growth of our sport with a third race in the US," F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali said when the race was announced in the spring. "Las Vegas is a destination known around the world for its excitement, hospitality, thrills, and of course, the famous Strip. There is no better place for Formula 1 to race than in the global entertainment capital of the world and we cannot wait to be here."

Formula 1 in the United States

The Miami Grand Prix was held for the first time last year around the grounds of Hard Rock Stadium where the NFL's Miami Dolphins play. The race is under a 10-year deal. The longest-tenured American race is the United States Grand Prix, which is held in Austin. The race is contracted through 2026 after its initial 10-year deal ended in 2021 and has seen hundreds of thousands of attendees each year.

In the 2023 season, Formula 1 also welcomes its first American driver since 2015. Logan Sargeant will be racing for Williams. The Florida native moved to Europe as a teenager and climbed the ranks of the Formula series to earn his super license and an opportunity to race in motorsport's top series.
