Former UCLA player Tyler Honeycutt's death ruled a suicide

The death of former UCLA player Tyler Honeycutt earlier this month was ruled a suicide, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office on Wednesday.

Honeycutt, who played at UCLA and was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the 2011 NBA draft, was pronounced dead on July 7 after a shootout with police at his home in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood of Los Angeles. Honeycutt shot at officers and then barricaded himself in his home in the standoff that lasted nearly nine hours.

The coroner, according to USA Today, listed suicide by a gunshot wound to the head as the cause of death. Honeycutt was 27.

Honeycutt played two seasons at UCLA from 2009-2011. He earned first-team All-Pac 12 honors in his sophomore season before declaring for the draft. The Kings picked up the 6-foot-8 forward with the 35th overall pick in 2011.

Honeycutt sparingly played for the Kings before he was traded to the Houston Rockets in 2013, though he never saw the court there. He then played overseas.
