Former Stars Defenseman Retires

Jordie Benn, older brother of Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn, has announced his retirement from hockey at the age of 37.

It took older brother Jordie two more years than Jamie to finally break into the NHL after initially going un-drafted. He played in the ECHL for the Victoria Salmon Kings and one year in the CHL for the Allen Americans before catching the eye of the Dallas Stars in 2010. He played a full season in the AHL for the Texas Stars before making his NHL debut in the 2011-12 season, but only for three games and played the rest of the season with the Texas Stars again.

He finally played his first full NHL season for the Stars in the 2013-14 season, establishing himself as a reliable blue-liner. Benn would spend three more seasons with the Stars before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens in the 2016-17 season. In 2019, he hit free agency and signed with the Vancouver Canucks, but would be traded the following year to the Winnipeg Jets. Staying in the Central Division, Benn played the 2021-22 season with the Minnesota Wild. Another summer in free agency landed Benn with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he would unknowingly play his last season in the NHL. This past season, Benn headed to Sweden to play in the SHL for Brynas IF.

In 607 NHL games, Benn recorded 26 goals, 111 assists and 137 points over the course of 12 seasons. Though he had a longer road to the NHL, Benn is a role model to young hockey players around the world. He proved that just because a player doesn't get drafted doesn't mean they can't have a long, successful career in the NHL.
