Former Sharks First-Round Pick Completes Draft Achievement Not Seen Since 2017

When former San Jose Sharks first-round pick Ozzy Wiesblatt made his NHL debut for the Nashville Predators last night, he became the final first-rounder to play an NHL game from the 2020 NHL Draft.

Wiesblatt is the 30th player from that draft class to make his NHL debut. Former Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Rodin Amirov was drafted 15th overall but unfortunately passed away in August of 2023 after suffering from brain cancer.

San Jose never called up Wiesblatt but has had two players from the 2020 first-round, Yaroslav Askarov and Shakir Mukhamadullin, play for them. After the New Jersey Devils drafted him, Mukhamadullin made his NHL debut last season with the Sharks.

The last NHL draft in which all its first-round picks played at least one NHL game was the 2017 NHL draft. Nico Hischier of the New Jersey Devils was the first pick in that draft class.

The 2017 NHL draft had one of the deepest first rounds in recent memory, with players such as Martin Necas, Robert Thomas, Jake Oettinger, and Miro Heiskanen selected.

The Sharks selected Josh Norris but sent him to the Ottawa Senators in the Erik Karlsson trade.

San Jose has two players in their current lineup drafted in the first round of the 2017 NHL Draft: Klim Kostin (31st overall via STL) and Timothy Liljegren (15th overall via TOR).
