Former Sabres Goalie Still Looking for New Home
Now that we are roughly at the halfway point of September, most players from this year's free agency class have found their new homes. In addition, many players who have not secured a contract for the 2024-25 season are starting to sign professional tryout (PTO) agreements in hopes of changing that.

While this is the case, many players remain without a contract or a PTO with NHL training camps just about here. Among them is former Buffalo Sabres goaltender Malcolm Subban.
Teams looking to add an experienced goaltender to their depth between the pipes could consider bringing in Subban on a PTO at least. While he is more of an AHL goaltender at this stage of his career, he can be useful in the role. In addition, with how often injuries occur during the season, it would not hurt for an NHL team to have a veteran goalie in their system for added insurance.
Subban, 30, spent the majority of this past season with the Springfield Thunderbirds of the AHL. In 31 games with the AHL squad, he had an 11-14-4 record, a 2.94 goals-against average (GAA), and a .907 save percentage (SV%). Near the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, he was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets for future considerations. He had one start for Columbus, saving 29 out of 32 shots and securing the win.
Ultimately, with teams always needing more depth between the pipes, it would not be particularly surprising if Subban received a PTO or contract for next season soon.
In 87 career NHL games split between the Boston Bruins, Vegas Golden Knights, Chicago Blackhawks, Sabres, and Blue Jackets, Subban has a 36-34-9 record, a 3.10 GAA, and a .898 SV%. In four appearances with the Sabres in 2021-22, he had a 0-2-1 record, 4.85 GAA, and a .871 SV%.
