Former Ottawa Senator Called Up By The Edmonton Oilers For Their Only Visit To Ottawa

After the injury to Darnell Nurse, the Edmonton Oilers have called up former Ottawa Senator defenceman Josh Brown. And it's just in time for the Oilers' only Ottawa appearance of the season on Tuesday night.

Nurse was hurt on Saturday night when Toronto enforcer Ryan Reaves caught him with his head down and then impolitely attempted to remove it. Reaves got a match penalty and a five-game suspension.

To replace Nurse on the roster, the Oilers called up Brown, who suddenly comes in handy after signing a three-year, $3 million deal in the offseason. After failing to make the team and clearing waivers, Brown has been an expensive member of the AHL's Bakersfield Condors for the past month. And he's been in a bad mood, leading the entire AHL in PIMs.

Brown spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Coyotes before their move to Utah. Prior to that, he did two seasons in Ottawa, where he played 72 games over two years, but frequently acted as the club's seventh defenceman. Brown was, presumably, a personal favourite of former Sens head coach D.J. Smith after he captained Smith's Oshawa Generals to the 2015 Memorial Cup title.

During his second season in Ottawa, Brown was traded to the Boston Bruins with a seventh-round pick, in exchange for Ottawa native Zach Senyshyn, who now plays in Germany, and a 2022 fifth-round draft pick. That fifth turned out to be Kevin Reidler, an intriguing 6-foot-6 goalie prospect who finally made his debut for the University of Nebraska Omaha on Saturday.

Brown would have come in handy for the Oilers against Reaves on Saturday night. Instead, he was making friends down in Bakersfield. The guy could always throw, that's for sure.
