Former Oilers Defender Calls It A Career

EDMONTON -- "You've gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em."

It appears that one former Edmonton Oilers' defender has decided to "fold 'em" and hang up the skates.

Justin Schultz crossed the pond earlier this year to continue his hockey playing career. This summer, he was a free agent and did not sign with any NHL teams.

The 34-year-old played eight games for HC Lugano of the National League, recording six assists in that span.

Earlier today, HC Lugano released a statement about the Canadian defender. In the statement, Schultz explained his reasoning for the decision.

"Mine is a strictly personal choice," Schultz revealed. "I discussed it with my family and I made the decision to end my career here and return to Canada."

"I thank Hockey Club Lugano for the professionalism shown and for respecting my choice and I wish the club and the team to find the path to success again."

The offensive-minded defender played for 12 years in the NHL before this season. In addition to the Oilers, he also suited up for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, and Seattle Kraken.

In 745 NHL games, he recorded 71 goals, 253 assists, and 324 points. Schultz averaged 19:41 of ice time per game over his career.

Although the Anaheim Ducks drafted him in 2008, Schultz never played a single game for them. He began his career with the Oilers in the 2012-13 season.

Now that he has decided to hang up the skates, fans must wait and see what is next for the former Oiler.
