Former Ohio State QB Art Schlichter sentenced to probation after cocaine possession

A Franklin County (Ohio) judge on Wednesday sentenced Art Schlichter to one year probation after he was found guilty of cocaine possession in October, according to court records.

The former Ohio State quarterback will serve an 11-month jail sentence if he violates probation on the fifth-degree felony count.

Schlichter was found unresponsive in a Hampton Inn hotel room in Hilliard, Ohio, June 6 according to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Hilliard police in Franklin County Municipal Court.

Officers administered Narcan, a drug used to reverse the effects of an opiate overdose, before Schlichter was taken to an area hospital by paramedics.

Drug paraphernalia was found "throughout the room," per court records, including a white powdery substance that was later found to be .26 grams of cocaine.

Schlichter was Ohio State's quarterback from 1978-81 and was a first-round draft pick by the Baltimore Colts in 1982. He was suspended in 1983 after an FBI investigation into gambling activities that took place while he was at Ohio State, but Schlichter was reinstated, later playing for the Buffalo Bills.

The 63-year-old was previously serving jail time for fraud charges related to a ticket scheme that resulted in millions of dollars in losses for victims. He was on parole at the time of his arrest.
