Ex-NFL DL Justin Bannan sentenced to 16 years in prison after 2019 shooting

Former NFL defensive lineman Justin Bannan was sentenced to 16 years in state prison on Thursday after the 2019 shooting of a Colorado woman, according to the Denver Post.

Bannan was convicted of attempted first-degree murder extreme indifference, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault with a deadly weapon and first-degree assault extreme indifference in September. Per the report, the 16-year sentence is the minimum sentence allowed under Colorado law.

Bannan, who played collegiately at Colorado, shot a 36-year-old woman in the arm in 2019 at Black Lab Sports — a business he co-founded. The woman, Ashley Marie, unlocked her therapy room that day and found Bannan already inside. Marie was shot while standing in the doorway, and was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Bannan was arrested on the scene, and had two loaded handguns on him along with a $20 bill with cocaine traces on it. He told police, per the report, that he didn’t mean to shoot Marie and that he was hiding there because the Russian mafia was chasing him and tracking his phone. The shooting, he said, was an “accident.”

Bannan was found guilty of the four charges in September, though his sentencing was delayed several times due to COVID-19. Marie, per the report, has since filed a lawsuit against Black Lab Sports.

Bannan spent 12 seasons in the league from 2002-13. He was first selected in the fifth round of the 2002 draft by the Buffalo Bills, and spent four seasons there before spending four more with the Baltimore Ravens. Bannan then wrapped up his career with short stints with the Denver Broncos, St. Louis Rams and Detroit Lions.

He appeared in 163 career games and had 313 total tackles.
