Former Grapevine high school baseball player returns to North Texas as an MLB All-Star

Cleveland Guardians designated hitter David Fry is making his return to North Texas as an MLB All-Star.

Fry went to Grapevine High School and proceeded to Northwestern State, where he was a four-time All-Southland Conference selection. He was drafted 215th by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2017 MLB Draft.

As a senior with Grapevine, Fry hit .430 with two home runs. He was named the District 6-5A MVP despite the Mustangs finishing fifth in the district and narrowly missing the playoffs.

Ahead of the 2022 MLB season, Fry was traded by Milwaukee to the Cleveland Guardians in a package deal for relief pitcher J.C. Mejía.

In 2023, Fry had a subpar season with a .238 batting average. This season, however, was a different story.

Fry made a drastic jump, hitting .305 with 14 doubles, eight home runs and 33 RBIs to earn his first All-Star spot.

Former Colleyville Heritage superstar and No. 2 overall draft pick Bobby Witt Jr., who plays shortstop for the Kansas City Royals, is also an All-Star. He will join Fry on the American League roster.

Both hometown heroes will play alongside Texas Rangers’ All-Stars Marcus Semien and Kirby Yates.

Current Grapevine baseball head coach Jimmy Webster, the 2024 Star-Telegram Co-Coach of the Year and Class 5A state champion, said the two Grapevine-Colleyville ISD athletes returning as All-Stars is “pretty dang cool.”

“It’s been great watching both of them excel,” Webster wrote on X. “Two great baseball players. Two exceptional humans. Won’t be their last MLB All Star Game.”

Grapevine baseball has been making headlines as of late with its title win and left handed pitcher Dasan Hill being named the Star-Telegram High School Baseball Player of the Year.
