Former GM Doug MacLean Says Maple Leafs Should Pursue Flames Top Star

Former NHL general manager and now television personality, Doug MacLean has sparked rumors of a blockbuster move, suggesting the Toronto Maple Leafs are exploring a potential trade with the Calgary Flames for former Leaf Nazem Kadri.

While MacLean’s credibility as a news source is often debated, he claims Toronto is "kicking tires" on Kadri’s availability.

According to MacLean, Kadri’s grit and experience make him a vital piece for the Leafs to compete against playoff powerhouses like the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes. He envisions a Toronto lineup with Auston Matthews, Kadri, and John Tavares as a dominant trio down the middle, turning the Leafs into a more formidable postseason contender.

MacLean believes the Maple Leafs need this kind of player to compete when it matters most.

However, MacLean acknowledged the potential hurdles. Flames GM Craig Conroy may hesitate to work with Brad Treliving, the Leafs' GM, given his past tenure with Calgary and controversial moves like the Jonathan Huberdeau contract. Additionally, Kadri’s departure from Toronto years ago came under less-than-ideal circumstances, which could complicate a return. However, Kadri has said in recent weeks that he wouldn't be opposed to the idea of returning to Toronto as a player one day.

MacLean Suggests Maple Leafs Target Kadri and Another Top Player

MacLean didn’t stop there, proposing the Leafs also pursue Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar. While enticing, and extremely wishful thinking, such a move seems improbable given Toronto’s tight salary cap and the significant assets required to land both players.

There is no way that Flames' GM Craig Conroy will give up both players without a huge return.

Whether serious talks are underway or this is mere speculation, the idea of Kadri’s return to Toronto and the fact the Leafs might be looking into it are intriguing.
