Former Gamecock Destanni Henderson back in the WNBA after being waived
Destanni Henderson, national championship-winning guard with the South Carolina Gamecocks, has signed a seven-day hardship contract with the Atlanta Dream, the organization announced Friday.
Henderson had previously been waived by the team in May.
Her signing brings USC’s former player count up to 11 in the WNBA. She joins fellow former Gamecocks Laeticia Amihere and two-time All-Star Allisha Gray in Atlanta.
Henderson was selected 20th overall by the Indiana Fever in the 2022 WNBA Draft after winning a national championship with South Carolina. She played in all 36 games and started five, averaging 2.5 assists and 5.3 points on 40.1% shooting in 16.4 minutes per game. The Fever waived Henderson on May 16, 2023.
She signed a contract with the Los Angeles Sparks on June 16, 2023, and was waived a month later. Henderson signed a seven-day contract with the Phoenix Mercury on Aug. 7, 2023, and signed a second one on Aug. 14, 2023. She was released Aug. 21, 2023.
This year Henderson signed a training camp contract with the Dream and appeared in both preseason games against Washington (May 4) and Indiana (May 9). She was waived on May 10 but is now back.
Henderson and Atlanta (7-11) will take on the Dallas Wings (4-16) in Texas Friday night at 7:30 p.m. on ION.
