Gagner signed his PTO with the Hurricanes shortly before the start of training camp. The 35-year-old forward was competing for a spot in the Hurricanes' bottom six, but his PTO has now come to an end without a contract for the season.

Gagner spent last season with the Edmonton Oilers, where he had five goals, five assists, and a minus-2 rating in 28 games. He also played 14 games with the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League (AHL), posting three goals and nine points in 15 contests.

Gagner's lone season with the Flyers was during the 2015-16 campaign. In 53 games with the Metropolitan Division club, he had eight goals, 16 points, and a plus-4 rating. He also had two assists in six playoff games for the Flyers.
