Former Devils First-Rounder Placed On Waivers
The Carolina Hurricanes have placed former New Jersey Devils defenseman Ty Smith on waivers.
Smith, 24, has appeared in eight games this season with the Hurricanes, where he has one goal, one assist, and a plus-1 rating. He has also played in 13 AHL games this campaign with the Chicago Wolves, posting three goals and 10 points.
Smith was originally drafted by the Devils with the 17th overall pick of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. In 114 career over two seasons with the Devils, he had seven goals, 43 points, and a minus-35 rating.
Smith's time in New Jersey ended during the 2022 NHL off-season when he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins, along with a third-round pick, in exchange for defenseman John Marino.
Teams looking for more defensive depth could consider claiming Smith. However, if he clears waivers, he will head back to the AHL.
In 131 career NHL games over four seasons, Smith has nine goals, 49 points, and a minus-31 rating.
