Former Devils Defender Is On Fire Right Now

During the 2023 NHL off-season, the New Jersey Devils traded Damon Severson to the Columbus Blue Jackets in a sign-and-trade deal for a third-round pick.

Severson landed a nice payday from the Blue Jackets, signing an eight-year, $50 million deal. He followed that up with a solid first season with the Blue Jackets in 2023-24, recording nine goals and 28 points in 67 games.

Severson is off to an excellent start in 2024-25 and is currently on pace to have one of his best offensive seasons. In 26 games, the 6-foot-2 defender has six goals, 15 points, and a plus-7 rating. Zach Werenski is currently the only Blue Jackets defenseman with more goals (8) and points (27) than Severson this campaign.

Severson's play is also improving as the season rolls along. The 2012 second-round pick has scored a goal in back-to-back games and has five points in his last four contests. This includes a three-assist night against the Chicago Blackhawks on Dec. 1.

During his time with the Devils, Severson demonstrated that he has the potential to provide solid offense when playing at his best. He had two 11-goal seasons as a Devil and memorably had a career-high 46 points in 80 games with New Jersey in 2021-22.

It will be fascinating to see if the former Devil can continue to stay hot for the Blue Jackets from here. Right now, he is showing no signs of slowing down.
