Peter Moore: “”This is a hard reset. Control, Alt, Delete”

Big Decisions for Liverpool’s New Hierarchy

Former Liverpool chief executive Peter Moore believes the new Anfield hierarchy has significant decisions ahead. The recent return of Michael Edwards as the chief executive of football, alongside the arrival of Richard Hughes from Bournemouth as technical director, has instilled hope. Many fans are optimistic that Liverpool will avoid the decline that Arsenal and Manchester United experienced after the departure of their long-serving managers.

Moore, who spent three years at Anfield working closely with Jurgen Klopp, during which Liverpool secured a Champions League victory and a Premier League title, is aware of the major issues on the horizon. Notably, star players Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold are entering the final year of their contracts.

“That is why they get the big bucks,” Moore told BBC Sport from his home in Santa Barbara. “Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, plus the heads of recruitment and scouting, will be liaising with the ownership in Boston and working on what is needed. The Profit and Sustainability calibration might mean some clubs have to sell.”

Slot’s Role in Liverpool’s Future

Arne Slot’s appointment as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement places him in a challenging position. Moore spent over three years with Liverpool, witnessing their triumphs under Klopp, and he recognises the difficulty of the task Slot faces.

Slot must navigate a difficult transition period, exacerbated by the fact that many Liverpool players will miss most of the pre-season due to their commitments to Euro 2024 and Copa America. “We have been blessed to have nine years of Jurgen Klopp,” Moore remarked. “This is a hard reset. Control, Alt, Delete. Who would want to step into Klopp’s shoes? Someone has to, and Slot, from everything I hear, is capable of hitting the ground running, winning over the fans, which you have to do at Liverpool.”

Contract Concerns and Pre-Season Woes

A major concern for Liverpool is the contracts of three key players—Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. These players entering the final year of their contracts adds to the complexity of Slot’s new role. “There are three key players going into the final year of their contract. That has to be done,” Moore stated. Additionally, the absence of several players during the pre-season due to international duties will hinder Slot’s ability to assess his squad fully.

Moore is empathetic towards Slot’s challenges, highlighting the importance of early success to win over Liverpool’s passionate fanbase. “His biggest problem is that so many players are not coming over due to the Euros and Copa America. It will only be when he gets back that he sees what his squad really looks like.”

Future Prospects Under New Leadership

Peter Moore’s insights underscore the importance of strategic decision-making and effective leadership in maintaining Liverpool’s success. With Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes at the helm, and Arne Slot stepping into a pivotal role, Liverpool’s future hinges on addressing key contract renewals and overcoming pre-season disruptions. The upcoming season will be a test of the new hierarchy’s ability to build on Klopp’s legacy and steer the club towards continued success.
