Former Bruins Defender Is Prime Trade Candidate

It has been a tough year for the Pittsburgh Penguins. At the time of this writing, they sport an 18-20-8 record and are sixth in the Metropolitan Division standings. They are also trending in the wrong direction, losing each of their last three games and eight out of their previous 10.

The expectation is that the Penguins will be sellers at the 2025 NHL trade deadline due to their immense struggles. With this, former Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk is standing out as a prime trade candidate.

Grzelcyk, 31, signed a one-year, $2.75 million contract with the Penguins this past off-season and is a pending unrestricted free agent. Thus, he could be a solid rental for a playoff club that needs help on their left side of their blueline.

Grzelcyk is quietly having a bounce-back year offensively, too. After recording just 11 points in 63 games last season with the Bruins, the Charlestown, Massachusetts native has one goal and 22 points in 46 games already this season with Pittsburgh. With this, he is on pace to beat his current career high of 26 points, which he set during the 2022-23 season with Boston.

It will be interesting to see what happens between Grzelcyk and the Penguins from here. Contenders looking for more offense from the point could consider adding him. It also doesn't hurt that he has plenty of post-season experience.
