Former Bears receiver endorses Ben Johnson for team's next head coach

The Chicago Bears head coaching position has been vacant for less than a week, yet everyone has an opinion on who should get the job. Numerous names have been floated out as possibilities following the firing of Matt Eberflus, and the speculation won't stop anytime soon. Even former players who played under Eberflus are throwing out options.

Former Bears and current New Orleans Saints wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown joined his brother Amon-Ra for their latest St. Brown Podcast episode and briefly discussed the coaching change. The Bears fell to Amon-Ra's Detroit Lions, losing 23-20 in puzzling fashion at the very end, which ultimately cost Eberflus his job.

Amon-Ra asked Equanimeous, who played for the Bears from 2022-2023, his thoughts on who should get the job. "I think he's currently in Detroit," Equanimeous said with a pointed look, hoping his brother would get the hint. "Aaron Glenn?" he asked, referring to the team's defensive coordinator. "Him or the other guy," Equanimeous responded. "You know the other guy. The guy on offense. I think his name is Ben?" Amon-Ra finally put two and two together. "Oh, our offensive coordinator Ben Johnson? Yeah, we'll see. You never know," he said with a sigh. "I've been seeing rumors," Equanimeous said.

The two brothers chatted briefly about the possibility, with Equanimeous hypothesizing that Johnson stayed in Detroit this past year so he could have time to find a potential coaching staff should he take a job somewhere. Amon-Ra wouldn't engage but did mention Glenn as a top candidate for the Saints job.

It was an interesting back and forth. A former Bears receiver, who spent two years under Eberflus, is promoting his brother's current offensive coordinator as a top candidate, amidst the team's preparation for a Super Bowl run. It makes sense why Amon-Ra didn't necessarily want to engage, but seeing Equanimeous talk up Johnson for this job is noteworthy. He knows that locker room better than most, and he believes the 38-year-old would make a good option for Caleb Williams and that roster.

There is still a long way to go before the team makes its decision, but Johnson makes a lot of sense for the Bears. We'll see what happens, but Johnson has at least one former Bear in his corner. His brother, however, might not be so receptive to the idea.
