How former Bears QB Justin Fields fared in preseason debut with Steelers

Every Chicago Bears fan is going to be curious about how Caleb Williams looks like relative to their former quarterback, Justin Fields. It's natural considering general manager Ryan Poles opted to move on from Fields and start anew with Williams.

Well, Bears fans caught a glimpse of Williams' impressive preseason debut against the Buffalo Bills. In two series, he was able to read defenses, adjust on the fly, make good throws, and improvise when plays broke down around him. That's not something we saw very often from Fields.

On Friday, Fields made his first preseason appearance with his new team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Honestly, Fields looked like he was in his typical mid-season form that he showed with Chicago.

Fields completed 5-of-6 passes for 67 passing yards, and he added three rushes for two yards. While Fields had some nice moments, he also fumbled the football twice. He isn’t a bad player, but this is what he is. He’s an okay quarterback who is going to make unavoidable mistakes.

The problem for Fields now is that he is on the same roster as future Hall of Famer Russell Wilson. Wilson didn’t play in the game, but he's projected to be the starter at this point. Although, head coach Mike Tomlin made it clear this is an open competition for the QB1 job. Only time will tell if Fields will see the field this year.

When you compare watching Williams to Fields, it just isn’t close. Williams can do things that few other quarterbacks are capable of, and he’s just scratching the surface of playing in the NFL. By age 25, he could be one of the best players in the league if he keeps progressing and trusting himself. After one preseason week, it seems obvious that Chicago made the right decision. But there's still a long way to go.
