Xavi Simons has been one of the standout performers at the UEFA Euro 2024, playing a key role in the Netherlands’ semi-final run.

Even though the 21-year-old’s run at the tournament in Germany came to an end last night, following the 2-1 loss to England, the former Barcelona and PSG wonderkid bowed out with a fine performance capped off with a special goal.

Now, a report from L’Equipe (h/t MARCA) reports that Xavi Simons could have ended up playing for Real Madrid.

A former trainee of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, the Dutch attacking midfielder left Spain to join PSG in 2019.

After spending three years in the French capital, Simons decided to leave the Parisian giants in 2022 when his contract was expiring.

At that time, Real Madrid reportedly made an approach to sign the Dutch prodigy. The idea was to bring him in to reinforce the Castilla squad and aim for promotion to La Liga 2.

However, Xavi Simons turned down the approach from Los Blancos and instead opted to sign for PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

The 21-year-old versatile attacking midfielder enjoyed a spectacular season in his homeland, prompting PSG to re-sign him in 2023, before loaning him out to RB Leipzig.

Simons impressed in the Bundesliga as well and has prompted a transfer war this summer with Bayern Munich, Barcelona and clubs in the Premier League taking an interest.

Simons’ performances in the European Championships, where he finished with one goal and three assists, are sure to have further increased the interest in him.

A gifted player, the 21-year-old could have been an excellent addition at Real Madrid, but it was not to be.
