Forgotten Ex-Oilers Forward Chosen For Russian Tournament

EDMONTON -- A blast from the past.

This piece of news is about that. Edmonton Oilers fans who have been following the team long enough are familiar with former GM Peter Chiarelli and his plethora of blunders.

On November 16, 2018, he traded Ryan Strome for Ryan Spooner. Spooner played 25 games for the Oilers and seven for the Bakersfield Condors.

He recorded three points with the Oilers and six with the Condors before he was dealt to the Vancouver Canucks three months after his acquisition. Sam Gagner came back to Edmonton as part of the deal.

Fast forward to today, and Spooner was just named on the KHL World Team roster for the Channel One Cup.

As you can see, this team is comprised of the best international players in the KHL. According to the KHL press release, this is the first time the KHL has assembled a team of this nature for this tournament.

Spooner has played in the KHL for the past six seasons, including this year. He is currently on his second year with Avangard Omsk. Last season, he exploded for 61 points in 65 games. That's a level of production that he has only experienced at the AHL and junior levels before crossing the pond to Russia.

This season, he has 14 points in 18 games, proving that he still has a little bit of game left in the tank. The 32-year-old may not be an NHLer anymore, but there is nothing wrong with being a great player in the second-best league in the world.
