Fonseca discusses ‘difficult’ Tomori situation and ‘great motivation’ among Milan players
Ahead of the important game between AC Milan and Red Star Belgrade, Paulo Fonseca spoke to the media and shared his thoughts on the task at hand. Among other things, he discussed the lack of playing time for Fikayo Tomori.
Milan are heading into tonight’s game with two consecutive wins in their bag, hoping to make it three in the prestigious competition. Indeed, they have their eyes on finishing in the top eight – thus avoiding a play-off tie – and the fixture list certainly allows for it.
Speaking to Sky Italia a few minutes ago, as transcribed by MilanNews, Fonseca shared his thoughts on the importance of the game and Milan’s new-found balance. He also talked about the recent lack of playing time for Tomori in the heart of the defence.
On the importance of the match
“We all understand how important this match, this competition, is. We have a great opportunity that we must exploit with ambition. It’s a moment in which we can do well, this brings great motivation to the players.”
On the opponent…
“Red Star is not an easy team to face but I think this is a competition where everyone is more motivated and our condition is that we don’t need to do anything special, because I know that my boys really want to win this match.”
On the balance found with Musah…
“Yes, I think the team is doing well with the help of Musah. I’m sure the team is better defensively, you don’t see any more moments of defensive insecurity. I like how the team is defending and I think this can help us.”
On Tomori’s exclusion…
“It’s difficult for me to make these decisions about the centre-backs when everyone is doing well, it’s not easy for me to leave out Tomori but also Pavlovic. But at the moment, the two centre-backs who are doing very well are Gabbia and Thiaw. Tomori has played in the last few games, for example in the last Champions League match but he must continue to work, because he is an important player for us and will be able to return to play.”
Tonight’s centre-back duo consists of Matteo Gabbia and Malick Thiaw, who undoubtedly have been in the best form lately. The exclusion of the Englishman thus makes sense, but it’s also true that his value is decreasing on the bench.
