Fofana reveals he had been in contact with Milan ‘for a few years’ before move

Youssouf Fofana was officially unveiled as an AC Milan player yesterday and he revealed that the club have been after him for several years.

Milan announced the signing on their official website yesterday, following the contract signing at the club headquarters and the medical tests that came in the morning. He will wear the No.29 shirt and he was present at San Siro last night to watch the 2-2 draw against Torino.

That game seemed to suggest that Milan could use some help on the defensive end of things as they were 2-0 down midway through the second half before Alvaro Morata and Noah Okafor salvaged a point.

Fofana spoke to the reporters who gathered at Casa Milan for his first press conference, which you can read in full, and he confirmed that the interest from the Rossoneri is long-standing and even that there have been ongoing discussions for years.

“Last year, Milan probed the ground to sign me, but then I decided to stay at Monaco because of the new project they had presented to me,” he said.

“In the end, everyone wins. There were some discussions during the season for my renewal, but then I simply said that I wanted to go elsewhere and start a new adventure.

“I don’t know if I can say it, but I have been in contact with Milan for a few years. Before it wasn’t possible to make the move, now it was. It was the right moment for me as well as the club. I’m arriving here at a time when I’m not too young, but not too old either.”
