Flyers hire former TV analyst Keith Jones as president, remove GM Daniel Briere's interim tag

The Philadelphia Flyers officially announced changes to their front office on Thursday, naming Keith Jones as president and removing general manager Daniel Briere's interim tag.

Jones will lead the strategic direction for all areas of hockey operations, while Briere will oversee signings, trades, player development and more. The Flyers also announced head coach John Tortorella will "provide input on various management topics."

Jones spent the past 23 years as an analyst on Flyers broadcasts for numerous outlets, most recently with TNT. The 54-year-old played in the NHL for nine seasons, suiting up for the Flyers, Washington Capitals and Colorado Avalanche. He scored 117 goals and added 141 assists in 491 career games.

"Today is one of the most humble and proudest days of my life," Jones said in a press release. "To be able to lead this team back to the winning tradition that everyone knows it can, and should be, is a true honor and one that I do not take lightly.

"I consider the Philadelphia Flyers organization the gold standard of the NHL and professional sports. I've seen how this city and these fans can rally around their team and there is nothing that compares to that feeling."

Briere took over as Flyers GM when the team parted ways with Chuck Fletcher on March 10. Briere just completed his eighth season as a member of the Philadelphia front office, holding positions in scouting and player development prior to his promotion to special assistant to the general manager in 2022.

Briere enjoyed a lengthy playing career in the NHL, recording 696 points over 973 games across 17 years. Six of those seasons were spent with the Flyers.

"To say that this has been a dream of mine would be an understatement," said Briere. "I've dedicated my life to the sport of hockey and to be given this opportunity in a city that means so much to me, words cannot describe my excitement.

"I truly believe this is an exciting time for the Flyers with the steps that we've taken this past season, the way our team has responded to the standard that was set both on and off the ice, and the path that we are on."

The Flyers finished the 2022-23 season in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division. The team has missed the playoffs in three consecutive years.
